(124n) Having subdued those with many names such as Maw-khol, Pa-khol, and Matichitra, he caused them to enter the gate of the Buddha's teachings. Later, a master named Dawa (Padmākara) arose, who composed the 34th Jataka Tales of the Buddha and rendered great benefit to the teachings. And those who successively came in the lineage of disciples, such as Rāhulabhadra, who took monastic vows from the common class and attained great siddhis. Furthermore, Master Nāgabodhi. Nāgabodhi, who attained the great Mahamudra siddhi. The great Siddha Śāvaripa. Buddhapālita, Bhavyaviveka. Master Candrakīrti, Prince Śāntideva, and others, who were excellent direct and successive disciples of the Āryas (father and son), continuously appeared and spread and sustained the royal teachings through explanation and practice. The noble Asaṅga, residing on the three grounds, Directly heard the five Dharmas from Maitreya's mouth. He composed the Five Treatises on Grounds and the Two Compendiums, etc. At a time when the Mahayana Tripitaka at Nālandā (Nālandā Monastery) in central India (Magadha) had been attacked three times, and only about one-fifteenth of the Mahayana Tripitaka remained. From the Mañjuśrī Mūlakalpa Tantra: After my parinirvāṇa, When nine hundred years have passed, A monk named Asaṅga, Will be skilled in the meaning of treatises. Sutras, ultimate meaning, conventional meaning, He will thoroughly differentiate many aspects. Himself teaching worldly knowledge, He will become a composer of treatises. Thus, as prophesied, the noble Asaṅga, who had attained the realization of the three grounds, appeared. Although he was extremely proficient in all branches of knowledge (vidyāsthānas) and the Tripitakas of both Mahayana and Hinayana, he found Prajñāpāramitā somewhat difficult to understand. So, he practiced Maitreya for twelve years on Vulture Peak Mountain (Grdhrakuta). Later, merely by seeing his face directly, he attained the samādhi of the Dharma stream. (124b) He held onto his robes and went to Tuṣita (Tuṣita Heaven). For twenty-five human years, he directly heard the five Dharmas, etc., and then returned to the human realm to benefit beings. That great being, who possessed inconceivable qualities such as clairvoyance, wrote down Maitreya's five Dharmas. And wrote extensive commentaries on them, such as the Five Treatises on Grounds, and the general compendiums of Mahayana and Hinayana.

He composed works such as the Abhidharma-samuccaya (Compendium of Abhidharma) and the Mahayana-samgraha (Summary of the Great Vehicle). In particular, no one knew the Abhidharma section of the Mahayana, but this master clarified it. Furthermore, among the twenty to thirty thousand Mahayana bhikshus (monks) who emerged, some attained the patience of non-arising dharmas (phenomena), and he elucidated the Mahayana tradition as clearly as the sun. Therefore, he is renowned as the Second Great Charioteer. The five Dharma treatises of Maitreya are: the two, Sutrālamkāra (Ornament of the Sūtras) and Abhisamayālamkāra (Ornament of Realization); the two, Madhyānta-vibhāga (Discrimination of the Middle from Extremes) and Dharma-dharmatā-vibhāga (Discrimination of Phenomena and Noumena); and the Uttaratantra (Sublime Continuum). Among these, the prose version of Dharma-dharmatā-vibhāga (Discrimination of Phenomena and Noumena) is considered a genuine work of Maitreya, while the verse version is believed to have been compiled by other wise ones. The three Maitreya treatises were widely disseminated from the beginning, but the two treatises, Uttaratantra (Sublime Continuum) and Dharma-dharmatā-vibhāga (Discrimination of Phenomena and Noumena), were unknown to other Panditas. Later, Maitripa saw light emanating from a crack in a stupa and thus discovered the texts of these two. He prayed to the Venerable Maitreya, who clearly appeared in the clouds and bestowed them perfectly. Maitreya then granted them to Pandita Gawa Drakpa, who in turn gave them to Sajjana of Kashmir. Through this gradual transmission, even in works like Senge Zangpo's Great Commentary on the Eight Thousand Verses, there are no citations of these two. It is also said that the source of Maitripa's Mahāmudrā (Great Seal) view is related to the Uttaratantra. Regarding the sequence of these (page 125, reverse side), Tibetan scholars hold that: first, the treatise Abhisamayālamkāra (Ornament of Realization), an instruction manual explaining the meaning of the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtras, was composed, including its homage. Then, in a manner resembling the collection of various scattered Mahayana sutras, the Sutrālamkāra (Ornament of the Sutras) was composed. The meaning of these two was somewhat condensed into the Madhyānta-vibhāga (Discrimination of the Middle from Extremes). The meaning of these was further greatly condensed into the Dharma-dharmatā-vibhāga (Discrimination of Phenomena and Noumena). Following that, the Mahāyāna Uttaratantra (Sublime Continuum), a treatise that explains the ultimate meaning of the profound scriptures in the context of the later Dharma-wheel, was composed, including its dedication. It is said that the three treatises in the middle have neither homage nor dedication, the first has a dedication, and the last has no homage, indicating that these five treatises were composed in such an integrated sequence. This is what is said. Among these, the Sutra (Discourse) section
