Upon observing these connections, in ancient times, the place where the Noble Śāriputra was born was the Brahmin city of Nālandā, which in Tibetan is called “Gyün Ster” (constant giving) or “Dambu Jyin” (gift of reeds). Later, King Mya Ngan Med (Asoka, meaning “Sorrowless”) restored Śāriputra’s stūpa on the site of the ruined city and also built a temple there, where he taught the Dharma. At that time, the Brahmin Mtho btsun grub rje and the Bde byed bdag po brothers also built eight monasteries there and enshrined all the Mahayana scriptures within them. Later, the bhikṣus Dga' bo, Dam pa'i sde, and Yang dag bden gsum also composed many treatises clarifying the doctrines of Yogācāra. These three are referred to as “early Yogācārins.” It is said that all five hundred early masters and their followers were proponents of the Vijñānavāda (rNam rig smra ba). ---2. The second part [Madhyamaka] is: The common ancestor of the accomplished ones, Rāhula (Sgra gcan 'dzin zhabs), First clearly manifested the supreme Mahayana Madhyamaka system. At that time, the common ancestor of all accomplished ones, the Brahmin Rāhula Bzang po, received full ordination from a bhikṣu named Nag po. He heard a vast ocean-like collection of Mahayana sūtras and tantras from many masters such as rNam par mi rtog pa, and from many principal deities such as Gsang ba'i bdag po. Afterwards, he taught the Dharma at Nālandā and first completely clarified the Mahayana Madhyamaka system. At this time, approximately eight masters upholding the Madhyamaka tradition emerged, such as the bhikṣu Kamala Garbha. Among them, the great bhikṣu Prakāśadharmaṇi, who directly received the Dharma from Ārya Sgrib sel, attained forbearance in the dharma of non-arising (Mi skye ba'i chos). He invited (retrieved) the 'Great Collection' ('Dus pa chen po) of one hundred thousand verses and one thousand chapters from the underworld. ---Then, the Second Buddha, the Noble Nāgārjuna, Invited the hundred thousand-verse Prajñāpāramitā, with three collections, Explained the intent of the three Dharma wheels. Refuted the realists, established Mahayana as the Buddha's word. Afterwards, in the southern region of Vaidarbha, the great master Nāgārjuna, who performed the deeds of the Second Buddha, appeared. From the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra: “In the southern land of Vaidarbha, ...

The monk, greatly renowned as Palden, Whose name is called Nāga, Who destroys the extremes of existence and non-existence, In this world, in my vehicle (teaching), After excellently expounding the unsurpassed Great Vehicle, Having attained the Very Joyful Ground, He will go to Sukhavati. Furthermore, in numerous sutras and tantras like the *Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra* (Drum-Like Sūtra), *Mañjuśrī-mūlakalpa*, and *Kālacakra Tantra*, this very one, prophesied by the Buddha, stayed for two hundred years in Central India (Yul Dbus), two hundred years in the South, and one hundred and twenty-nine years on Glorious Mountain (Palgyi Ri, Śrīparvata), engaging in listening, expounding, and meditating. He built ten million monasteries and stupas, provided sustenance to the Sangha, performed deeds for non-human beings such as Nāgas, and refuted the attacks of non-Buddhists. In all ways, he upheld the sacred Dharma, and particularly rendered unparalleled kindness to the teachings of the Great Vehicle. From the land of Nāgas (Klu'i Yul, Naga realm), he brought forth the *Prajnaparamita in One Hundred Thousand Verses*. After that, no new Mahayana sutras appeared. Through the three collections: Collection of Discourses, Collection of Reasoning, and Collection of Praises, he first established the tradition of the Great Chariot (Madhyamaka), correctly interpreting the profound meanings of the first, middle, and last turnings of the Dharma wheel without error. He refuted the contentions of the Śrāvaka Realists and proclaimed the lion's roar establishing Mahayana as the Buddha's word. Finally, having clearly perfected the thirty-two major marks, he bestowed his head to Rabnue, the son of King Deche, blessed his head and body to be indestructible, and then departed to Sukhavati (Land of Bliss) to purify the Buddha-field. He will soon re-enter a body to propagate the teachings and perform boundless benefits for sentient beings. Herein, the identification of the three collections is as follows: Most Tibetans identify the Collection of Discourses as: *A Letter to a Friend* (bShes sPrang, Suhrllekha), sent as a message to a king from afar. *Precious Garland* (Rin Chen Phreng Ba, Ratnāvalī), as a direct discourse. The Collection of Reasoning includes: The Collection of Reasoning that refutes the extremes of elaborations to be accomplished: *Root Wisdom* (rTsa ba Shes rab, Mūlamadhyamakakārikā) *Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning* (Rig pa Drug cu pa, Yuktiṣaṣṭikā) *Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness* (sTong nyid bDun cu pa, Śūnyatāsaptati) *Refutation of Objections* (rTsol Zlog, Vigrahavyāvartanī) – these are four. The Collection of Reasoning that refutes the reasoning of dialectics of the means of accomplishment: *Subtle Analysis* (Zhib mo rNam 'Thag, Vaidalya) – this makes five in total. The Collection of Praises includes: In the context of the ground, there are two: *Praise to the Dharmatā* (Chos can la gsal bar bstod pa) and *Praise to the Dharmadhātu* (Chos kyi dbyings la bstod pa).
