(121a) Since it is held that the teachings of the Teacher (Buddha) were compiled by Shariputra and others, the 'Seven Treatises' (Abhidharma literature) are the initial interpretive treatises. Some acharyas (masters) believe that although the 'Seven Treatises' were originally the Buddha's words, it is possible that intervening phrases were inserted by Shravaka (Hinayana) common individuals, just like some Sutra Pitaka texts of different vehicles. Therefore, any errors that contradict the three valid cognitions (perception, inference, and reliable testimony) should be considered as phrases later interpolated as corruptions. Just as Mahayana has a separate Abhidharma Pitaka, Shravakas should also have one. While it is true that the contents of the three Pitakas (Sutra, Vinaya, Abhidharma) are mutually connected, the other two Pitakas (Sutra and Vinaya) appear in separate volumes, and there is no reason why the Abhidharma Pitaka should not appear separately. This is their view. While this latter view seems plausible, the great acharya Vasubandhu appears to align with the Sautrantika view. Therefore, for now, we accept it as such, as stated by Jetsun Thams-cad mkhyen-pa (the Omniscient Lord). The monks, including the four great venerable ones, With hundreds of thousands of disciples, were Shravakas holding their respective schools. The great venerable Dharmatrata (Chos-skyob) of Kashmir (Kha-che), the great venerable Vasumitra (Dbyig-bshes) of western Mathura (Ma-ru), the great venerable Ghoshaka (Dbyangs-sgrog) of Tokhara (Tho-gar), and the venerable Buddhalata (Sangs-rgyas-lha) of Varanasi (Wa-ra-na-si): these four, renowned as the four great acharyas of the Vaibhashika school, each had disciples numbering in the hundreds of thousands. The Vaibhashika scriptures include texts such as the 'Garland of Three Mixtures' (Spel ma gsum gyi phreng ba) and the 'Hundred Instructions' (Gdams ngag brgya pa). Furthermore, among the Sautrantika school's great venerable ones, such as Sthavira (Gnas-brtan), Shridatta (Dpal-len), Kumāralabdha (Gzhon-nu-len), and Laghu (Mi'u-thung), each of their schools flourished with hundreds of thousands of monks, who established their own traditions. This was the period when Shravakas were largely prevalent. (121b) Chapter 2: [Explanation of the Period When Mahayana Traditions Were Largely Practiced] is divided into three parts: 1. The Common Mahayana Pitaka, 2. The Uncommon Tantric Pitaka, 3. An explanation of how it spread in the present and will spread in the future. Part 1 (The Common Mahayana Pitaka) is divided into two: 1. Cittamātra (Mind-Only), and 2. Madhyamaka (Middle Way). Part 1 (Cittamātra) begins with: Then the venerable Avitarka and others, The masters of the ten bhumis...

Having heard the dharma, many attained the continuous stream of samadhi. The Mahayana (Dharma) mostly came to the human realm. After that, following the arrival of the noble Upagupta and others, at that time, the Arhat Sthavira "Garbho," born in the land of Anga, who was the first to uphold the Mahayana, appeared. Among the great monks Abhitarka, Vigatarāgadhvaja, Divyākaragupta, Rāhulamitra, Jñānatāla, and others, they directly heard the dharma from the lords of the ten bhumis, such as Maitreya, Mañjuśrī, Avalokiteśvara, and Vajrapāṇi. Approximately five hundred individuals who purely attained the continuous stream of samadhi appeared. King Lakṣa Aśva made offerings with faith, dedicating temples and disciples. He had the Tripitaka written into volumes and established the system of teaching and listening (to the Dharma). Three five-hundred Mahayana practitioners appeared, all of whom upheld innumerable sutras, possessed unobstructed wisdom, and purely attained forbearance. These individuals merely displayed a slight playful use of miraculous powers and clairvoyance in front of people. From these, numerous Mahayana practitioners flourished. Simultaneously, most of the Mahayana sutras, such as the "Noble Ratnakuta Sutra in 100,000 Verses," the "Noble Avatamsaka Sutra in 100,000 Verses," the "Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra in 25,000 Verses," the "Ghanavyūha Sūtra in 12,000 Verses," the "Saddharmasaṃgraha Sūtra in 12,000 Verses," and others, also came from the distinct realms of gods, nāgas, gandharvas, rakṣasas, and so forth (122 upper side) to the human realm; especially many came from the realm of the nāgas. At that time, the renown of the Mahayana spread in all directions, and the Śrāvakas (Hearers) could not comprehend it in their minds, thus they slandered the Mahayana as not being the Buddha's word. Later, Aryadeva and others proved that the Mahayana was indeed the Buddha's word. Many monasteries were built at Nālandā. Garbho and others composed many treatises. They were renowned as speakers of the Vijñānavāda (Consciousness-only School). After that, the five hundred Mahayana masters deliberated, saying that if the Dharma were taught in the birthplace of Maudgalyāyana, it would merely become very powerful; but if the Dharma were taught in the birthplace of Śāriputra, then the Dharma would spread widely.
