It is said that when the one wearing a saffron robe (Śaṇavāsī) taught the Dharma, tens of thousands of Arhats and about one hundred thousand who saw the truth arose. Then, Upagupta, the son of a perfume seller, renounced the world and entrusted the teachings (Dharma). The Teacher (Buddha) prophesied: "One hundred years after my Parinirvana, an aniconic Buddha (or a great accomplished one) will perform the deeds of a Buddha." The noble Upagupta subdued sinful Maras with miraculous powers. In a cave eighteen cubits long, twelve cubits wide, and six cubits high, he taught instructions. Each Arhat who attained liberation cast a four-finger-long wooden stick, and when the cave was filled with these sticks, he ordained Dhitika, the son of a Brahmin from the city of Phagsrgyal, and entrusted him with the teachings. Dhitika clarified the Teacher's teachings by subduing many Kshatriya and Brahmin lineages who had entered wrong paths through miraculous powers. After that, he rescued Krishna, the householder's son, from dangers on the island, (120v) ordained him, and entrusted him with the teachings. The noble Black-Foot (Phakpa Nagpoi Zhabs, possibly Nagarjuna) established many ordinary monks holding ego-views in right view, clarified the teachings on the island of Sinhala (Sri Lanka), and performed many great deeds. Then, he entrusted the teachings to the Arhat named Sudarshana, the son of a Kapilavastu family, who was guided to liberation by Sukayana. The great Sudarshana subdued five hundred Nagas and Yakshas who had no faith in the teachings. He made temples and the monastic community prevalent throughout the southern regions. He also established the teachings on many small islands. He even made the Dharma spread somewhat in China, and then passed into Parinirvana. Between Mahakashyapa and Sudarshana, there are seven lineages of transmission, or, including the aforementioned great Nimagungpa, a total of eight lineages of transmission. These are Arhats liberated from both extremes, meditating on the eight liberations, holding the complete scriptural teachings, perfectly upholding the Dharma, and their deeds were comparable to those of the Buddha himself. Although many Arhats appeared after them, their deeds were not equal to theirs. Thus, the seven lineages of Dharma transmission described in the Vinaya Minor (Lung Phren Tshegs) are completed here. From this point onwards, the famous lineages among the Shravakas are not clear, but among the Mahayana, the famous lineages are...

In the commentary on the Sugata (Buddha's teachings), it is also explained that the lineage occurred from the Buddha to Bhikshu Simha. Among these, the lineage from the Teacher (Buddha) to Dhītika is the same as mentioned before. Dhītika transmitted it to Vibhaga. Vibhaga transmitted it to the Venerable Buddhanandī. Buddhanandī transmitted it to Buddhamitra. Buddhamitra transmitted it to Bhikshu Rtsibs. Rtsibs transmitted it to Suśānta. Suśānta transmitted it to Aśvaghoṣa. Aśvaghoṣa transmitted it to Amṛta. Amṛta transmitted it to Nāgārjuna. Nāgārjuna transmitted it to Āryadeva. Āryadeva transmitted it to Rāhula. Rāhula transmitted it to Saṅghanandī. Saṅghanandī transmitted it to the Arhat Bhikshu. The Arhat Bhikshu transmitted it to Kalāśa. Kalāśa transmitted it to Kumāralāta. Kumāralāta transmitted it to Śāpata. Śāpata transmitted it to Vasubandhu. Vasubandhu transmitted it to Manota. Manota transmitted it to Hagalikanayaṇaśa. Hagalikanayaṇaśa transmitted the teachings to Bhikshu Simha. The first treatise, the Vibhāṣā, flourished. Those who attained the four fruits were as numerous as the dust on the earth. During that time, the tradition of teaching and hearing the great Vibhāṣā, the foremost among treatises, flourished. By having received full ordination and diligently practicing meditation, those who attained the four fruits—Stream-enterer, Once-returner, Non-returner, and Arhat—increased daily, becoming as numerous as the dust of the earth. The meaning of "Vibhāṣā" is "detailed explanation." Previously, it was simply the verbal expression of the Teacher's (Buddha's) own words, teaching his instructions, and clarifying the meaning of the teachings within themselves. There were no separate treatises that were easier to understand than the Sūtras. Later, for the benefit of future sentient beings, the treatise called Vibhāṣā was composed. Some say that it was collectively composed by Arhats during the time of Nyas-pa. Others believe it was composed by Grags-pa and the Sarvāstivādins, among others. Tibetans, however, claim that five hundred Arhats, including the Sarvāstivādins and Sgur-po (possibly Kātyāyanīputra), composed it in the temple of the 'dancing performer' (gar mkhan) at Mount Pāripātra (Ribo 'bigs byed) in the north. This seems to be a statement mixing the former two traditions. In any case, it is the compilation of the oral traditions of those Arhats, transmitted from ear to ear by the Elders (Sthaviras), and later written down. According to the Vaibhāṣikas, who believe the seven Abhidharma treatises are the Buddha's words, the first commentary on his intent is considered to be the Vibhāṣā. Whereas according to the Sautrāntikas, even the seven Abhidharma treatises that appeared before the Vibhāṣā were composed by ordinary Śrāvakas (hearers).
