Having become primary/important, the recitation of sutras also became diverse, and even the Arhats were unable to pacify the disputes. When they passed away, the bhikṣus came to know (these circumstances). After that, a bhikṣu named Naga also proclaimed the five points, which again greatly intensified the disputes within the monastic community, leading to a split into the four fundamental schools: Mahāsāṃghika, Sarvāstivāda, Sthaviravāda, and Sammitīya (or Multitude-honored). Naga's disciple, a monk named Yidan (Yid-brtan), also proclaimed the five points, further expanding the disputes, and these four fundamental schools gradually branched out to become eighteen. The eighteen schools that branched out from these are, according to the *Samayabhedoparacanacakra* (Wheel of Distinctions among the Schools): The Eastern, Western, and Snow Mountain Abiding Schools; The Lokottaravāda (Supra-mundane) School; The Prajñaptivāda (Designationist) School; The Mahāsāṃghika and its five branches; The Mūlasarvāstivāda (Root-Sarvāstivāda) and the Kāśyapīya (Light-protecting) School; The Saiyagriva (Earth-proclaiming) School and the Dharmaguptaka (Dharma-protecting) School; The Bahuśrutīya (Much-heard) and the Tamraśāṭīya (Red-robed) disciple Schools; The Vibhajyavāda (Analytic Discourse) School; All the above are Sarvāstivāda. The Jetavanavāsin (Victorious Grove Dwelling) and the Abhayavāsin (Fearless Dwelling) Schools; The Mahāvihāravāsin Sthaviravāda (Great Monastery Elder School); The Saila (Mountain) and the Sammitīya (Protected) Schools; The Vātsīputrīya (Vatsī's Son) Schools, All are three forms revered by all. (113b) Based on distinctions of region, meaning, and ācārya (teacher), eighteen different forms were taught. As stated above, at this time, there were different views among the schools regarding the number of fundamental schools and how they branched out, but what is recorded here is according to the system of the Sarvāstivāda school itself. Pārśva and five hundred other Arhats, And four hundred bhikṣus, were invited by King Kaniṣka. To reconcile the divisions, they compiled the Three Baskets (Tripiṭaka), And committed them to writing, thus conducting the Third Council. At that time, five hundred Arhats, led by the venerable Pārśva, who had attained perfect mastery through extensive learning, and four hundred bhikṣus, including Vasumitra, as well as five hundred bodhisattvas, were all invited by King Kaniṣka. In the land of Kashmir, they were invited to reside in the newly built Ear Ornament Monastery (Karnakāgāra) and were honored and supported. All eighteen of these branched-out schools, in the Sūtra of the Prophecy of Kṛkṛ's Dream (Kṛkṛ Rmilam Lung Bstan gyi mdo), the Great King...

Oh, what you saw in your dream—eighteen people dividing a piece of cloth yet it did not tear—this foretells that even if the doctrine splits into eighteen schools, the cloth of liberation cannot be torn. This is affirmed by scripture and extensively explained in the Abhidharma. This is known as the Third Council. At that time, all the Vinaya (monastic discipline) texts were committed to writing. The Sutra and Abhidharma texts that had not been written down previously were also written down. The written texts were then thoroughly corrected. At this juncture, while the people of Kashmir (Kashmir, India) hold this view, the scholars of the central land (India) believe that the Third Council took place at the Kusana monastery within the Jalandhara temple (Jalandhara, India). This is the chapter explaining the Buddhist councils. This is the commentary on the third chapter explaining the Buddhist councils. Fourth, the chapter explaining the mode of transmission of the Early Translation Nyingma tradition. Chapter four, explaining the mode of transmission of the Early Translation Nyingma tradition, has two parts: 1. A general explanation of the mode of transmission of the Tantra Section; 2. A specific distinction of the Sadhana Section. 1. The first part has two points: 1. Brief presentation; 2. Extensive explanation. 1. The first point is: In the tradition of the Early Translation Nyingma, of the Great Secret, The great modes of transmission of the doctrine are three. In the self-tradition of the Early Translation Nyingma, the doctrine of the Great Secret Vajrayana is presented in the manner of three great modes of transmission: From the Expounding Tantra Ocean, it is said: Victorious Ones, Bodhisattvas, Yoginis, The intent (or realization) is transmitted aurally, Until it reaches someone. Thus it is stated. 2. The second part, the extensive explanation, has three points: 1. The Victorious Ones' Mental Transmission; 2. The Vidyadharas' Symbolic Transmission; 3. The Human Aural Transmission, along with its offshoots. 1. The first point has three parts: 1. How the Teacher expounded; 2. How the retinue gathered; 3. How the doctrine was entrusted. 1. The first point is: In the Akanistha Dharmadhatu of pure self-appearance, Samantabhadra, to the ocean of wisdom, The luminous unconditioned intent, In inconceivable time, manifested its nature. Among the two presentations of the Teacher (Buddha)—Dharmakaya and Rupakaya— The first point is: its essence is primordially pure, and adventitiously self-
