The Sautrāntikas say that these manifest external objects such as form are conventional truths, and therefore do not appear manifestly to consciousness. Even when the senses and objects meet, something like the pattern of incense ash appears. The self-characterizing entity that establishes external objects as transformations of consciousness is truly existent as the substance of a pig or a hidden woman. Therefore, it generates the self, that is, the inner person, and the outer realm of the world or the objects of experience. That's what they say. But that is not reasonable. If the pig-woman (phag na mo) appears to consciousness, it contradicts the pig-woman; if it does not appear, then it cannot transform the image either. Secondly, as stated in "Spoken to All," the perfect Buddha, who is liberated from the two obscurations and their predispositions, directly knows all knowable things as they are and as many as they are. This unique being, unparalleled in the world, said that these three realms are merely the self-image of the mind, which is defiled by ignorance, and that there is no establishment in reality. As stated in the Sutra of the Ten Stages: "O sons of the Victorious Ones, these three realms are only mind." Also in the Lankavatara Sutra: "Like images appearing in a mirror, they appear without being real. If the appearance of the mind is not understood, two kinds of discrimination arise. Through the connection of discriminatory predispositions, various minds arise. To people, other realms appear. The realm of the world is only mind." Also in the Tantras: "Outside the precious mind, there is no Buddha, and no sentient beings can be found. The objects of consciousness, the aspects of things, have no external existence whatsoever." Therefore, these things do not arise from the self as the self, as the Tirthikas believe, because the self is already established and does not need to be generated. Nor does the other arise from the other, because the so-called "other" must also depend on the self. If there is no self to depend on, who can be the other? However, if the other generates the other, then the sun should generate darkness, and the potter should generate pots, but such a thing is not possible. Nor does it arise from the union of the two, because it would incur the two previous faults. Or, the self and the other are simultaneous, like horns on the head, and cannot be causes and conditions for each other. Without a cause, then in the sensory perception, from the seed...

It is not reasonable to see things like sprouts growing. So, how should it be understood? All phenomena encompassed by samsara and nirvana are, in ultimate truth, emptiness that transcends the extremes of elaboration, while in conventional appearance, cause and effect arise interdependently. That which arises in dependence upon something is, in itself, empty of true existence established by its own nature. Thus, the interdependent arising, whose nature appears as the duality of grasper and grasped like a reflection of the moon in water, is the conventional truth of phenomena. That mere appearance itself, being by nature free from all elaborations, abides in emptiness, the nature of sound, is the ultimate truth of the nature of phenomena. As the Essence of Wisdom says: "Just this appearance is the conventional, the other is the ultimate." And again, from the Condensed Essence of Wisdom: "The conventional is the appearance of duality, the truth is like the moon in water. The ultimate truth is free from all characteristics, its place is the eighteen emptinesses." Thus, is the conventional appearance of duality and its nature, emptiness, the ultimate truth, one or different? It is not one, because the conventional truth is established in illusory appearance but not in ultimate truth. The ultimate truth is established in the nature of phenomena but not in the conventional. For example, the moon appears in water, but it is not the real moon, and the real moon does not appear as the moon in water. If they were one, then seeing the conventional truth would mean seeing the ultimate truth, and so on, there would be four faults, as stated in the Explanation of the Profound Meaning Sutra. The two truths are also not different, for example, when a rope is mistaken for a snake, in reality the rope exists and the snake does not, but in illusory appearance, the presence and absence of both gather on the same basis, so they are not different. Similarly, the conventional appearance and ultimate emptiness are inseparable, so they are not established as different. If they were different, then the ultimate truth would not be the nature of the conventional truth (91), and so on, there would be four faults, as stated in the Explanation of the Profound Meaning Sutra. Therefore, the two truths are neither one nor different, but are free from oneness and difference, and abide in the inseparability of appearance and emptiness. Again, as the Explanation of the Profound Meaning Sutra says: "The conditioned realm and the nature of the ultimate are one and diffe
