One should repeatedly contemplate whether the meaning heard is correct or incorrect, and then practice it. Then, if the correct meaning is meditated upon with the three aspects of preparation, main practice, and subsequent practice, worldly meditation arises. (84) Through the wisdom that arises from worldly meditation, the clear appearance of selflessness is attained on the path of joining. Through the wisdom that arises from transcendental meditation, selflessness is seen manifestly on the path of seeing. On the path of meditation, this is practiced. When habituation reaches its culmination, liberation and omniscience are attained. As stated in the Ratnakuta Sutra: By abiding in discipline, one attains samadhi. Having attained samadhi, one cultivates wisdom. Through wisdom, one attains pure wisdom. Pure wisdom is perfected by discipline. For example, just as a harvest of fruit arises when a field, seed, water, fertilizer, and warmth are all present, so too, if the ground of discipline, the seed of hearing, and all the water, fertilizer, warmth, and moisture of thought and meditation are complete, the fruit of Buddhahood will easily ripen. The second of the root text, the meaning of the treatise, is divided into three: Explanation of the aspect of consciousness, explanation of the aspect of wisdom, and a concise summary of these meanings. The first of these is divided into four: Explaining that the root of delusion and non-delusion is mind itself, establishing that appearances are mind, revealing that mind is unborn, and explaining the eight aggregates that are the causes and conditions of delusion. The first of these is also divided into three: (85) The wrong views of others, how the Victorious Ones taught, and how to explain after one's own realization. The first is: From the three realms, they say, arise. Thus it is said, that which is gathered by consciousness is of the nature of delusion. How do all these sentient beings who wander in the three realms of desire, form, and formlessness arise? Those who have not entered a philosophical system, the childish common people, do not understand investigation and analysis, and therefore do not understand anything. Those who have entered a philosophical system, the non-Buddhists, wrongly understand cause and effect. Those who are Buddhist Shravakas understand only a part, and therefore do not truly understand the meaning of appearances being mind, mind being emptiness, and emptiness appearing as dependent origination, and thus speak many exaggerations and slanders. Among them, the non-Buddhist Samkhya school believes in the three qualities of pleasure, pain, and indifference, or the three constituents of rajas, tamas, and sattva.

The primary cause of decline is said to be permanent, solitary, non-material, hidden, and possessing unobstructed power over transformations and incarnations, endowed with five characteristics. Because the primary cause gives rise to fruits that undergo changes, those who believe that self arises from self and the Ishvaras (自在天) consider the Ishvara to be solitary, permanent, moving, divine, worthy of reverence, pure, the agent, and autonomous, endowed with eight characteristics, existing as the cause of all internal and external phenomena. Those who believe that other fruits arise from other causes, such as the Vaishnavas (遍入天), consider that both the self with five characteristics and the agent are capable of producing internal and external phenomena. The Charvakas (顺世外道) believe that all containers and contents arise naturally from no cause. As it is said: "The sun rises, rivers flow downwards, lentils are round, tsima (茨麻) are long, the peacock's feathers are beautiful, all these are not made by anyone, but arise from nature." By saying this, they abandon even the phenomena that appear manifestly in the world, and therefore they are the worst among all philosophical schools. Among those who acknowledge an agent, in Tibet, it is believed that all good and bad of the world and sentient beings are made by Sampa Phya (སྒམ་པ་ཕྱ་). The Tirthikas (外道) say that Ishvara (自在天), Brahma (梵天), and Vishnu (遍入天) created the world and sentient beings. These are all false delusions and should be abandoned. (87) Furthermore, among the four Buddhist schools, the first, the Shravaka Vaibhashikas (小乘有部宗), believe that although the external phenomena that appear as objects are not real, the material atoms are real existences without parts and not objects of the senses. The internal consciousness is a momentary, indivisible atom of mind, and since the previous atom cannot be altered by other things, it is permanent. These atoms gather to form aggregate atoms, which become the objects of sense consciousness, and this conventional phenomenon has the characteristic of impermanence. Therefore, they acknowledge that the individual atoms of external form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharma are real. It is unreasonable to divide material atoms into six or ten directions with wisdom, or to divide mind atoms into three times, because it cannot be established. If there are no parts, then coarse things cannot be formed. Moreover, the Shravakas.
