It clearly appears as the wisdom of knowing from the ground. In order for fortunate disciples to realize through the subsequent compassion without objectification, it should be specifically stated. This is also instructing through the door of the essence of liberation. As the second Buddha, Dignāga, said, "One who abides in discipline, possesses hearing and thought, should diligently engage in meditation." Therefore, whoever desires to attain liberation and omniscience, as a basis, that person must initially protect a flawless discipline, as it is the foundation of qualities. As stated in the "Friendly Epistle," "Like the earth, the basis for moving and not moving, discipline is the foundation of qualities, as the Buddha said." One who possesses discipline must engage in extensive hearing. Why? Because to attain Buddhahood, one must realize the meaning of the two selflessnesses (81). To realize that, one must understand the meaning of the scriptures and treatises, and one must know the scriptural authority and reasoning. To know that, one must engage in hearing. If one does not do that, one will not realize the meaning of the two selflessnesses. If one does not realize that, one will not know the meditation on selflessness. If one does not know the meditation on selflessness, even if one meditates, the wisdom arising from meditation will not arise. If that does not arise, the path of seeing of the noble ones cannot arise. If that does not arise, it is impossible to ultimately attain Buddhahood through meditation. As stated in the "Compendium of Vehicles," "Without the imprints of hearing and so forth, it is unreasonable for that result to arise." And so forth, many are stated. Therefore, if there is no wisdom of hearing, one cannot distinguish what to accept and reject, and whatever one does is weak. In all lifetimes, one will become dull-witted. Even if one meditates, one will not cut the root of self-grasping. And so forth, there are many faults. If one possesses hearing, one will be skilled in knowledge and will not be foolish. Because one's intelligence increases, one will gain fearless confidence in everything. Because the mindstream is completely liberated, one will be happy. One will be counted among the wise. In all lifetimes, one will possess perfect wisdom. One's faculties will be sharp, and one will retain what one has heard. One will meet Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and be able to engage in meaningful discussions on the Dharma. One will purify one's cognitive obscurations. One will turn the wheel of Dharma for others without error (82), and so forth, qualities will arise. As stated in the "Compendium," "With wisdom, having fully known the nature of phenomena, the realm

One will be completely liberated from the three realms of existence. The supreme among humans, having turned the precious wheel, also teaches the Dharma to beings in order to end suffering. Thus it is said. Also, in the Ratnakuta Sutra, it is said: Through hearing, one knows all dharmas; through hearing, one abandons what is meaningless; through hearing, one abandons evil deeds; through hearing, one attains nirvana. And so on, it is extensively taught. If one lacks the wisdom of hearing and contemplation, and does not understand the meaning of the two selflessnesses, and engages in foolish meditation, even if one gains a little samadhi, one will not be able to abandon the root of afflictions, and therefore will fall into samsara. For example, like the Tirthika Ajivikas, who, through asceticism, remained in equanimity in the samadhi of emptiness for twelve years, and were born in the extreme. In the Extensive Samadhi Sutra, it is said: Although they meditate on samadhi, they do not destroy the clinging to self. That is a field of afflictions, extremely disturbed. This asceticism is like meditating on samadhi. Thus it is said. Having obtained the eye of profound wisdom of hearing and contemplation, one should strive diligently day and night to seek the real meaning from meditation. In the chapter on the collection of samadhis, it is said: Hearing is what increases wisdom; if there are both contemplation and the two, then one engages in meditation; from that, one obtains the supreme accomplishment. Thus it is said. Also, in the Ten Endurance Stages of the Noble Bodhisattva Ground, it is said: O sons of the Victorious Ones! The bodhisattva who is a beginner should first be encouraged to speak out; having heard much, one should be encouraged to go to a solitary place. Thus it is said. If one does not have meditation, what fault is there? If one does not have meditation, and only has hearing and contemplation, one will not directly realize the ultimate truth. In the Miscellaneous Matters, it is said: How can the sweet taste of sugarcane not become tasting through explanation? When one eats sugarcane, one tastes the sweet taste. The meaning of emptiness, one cannot taste its flavor by speaking. When one respectfully meditates on it, self-awareness will arise in it. Thus it is said. Therefore, those individuals who seek liberation as their goal should first purify the three doors of body, speech, and mind with the discipline of renunciation. Then, with the wisdom of hearing, cut off the superimpositions, and generate the wisdom arising from contemplation through the door of intelligence.
