A Treatise on Differentiating Consciousness (རྣམ་པར་ཤེས་པ་,vijñāna) and Wisdom (ཡེ་ཤེས་,jñāna) A Treatise on Differentiating Consciousness and Wisdom (63) A clear explanation of the words and meanings of the Treatise on Differentiating Consciousness and Wisdom, called "The Ornament of Self-Arisen Realization," is presented. (77) A clear explanation of the words and meanings of the Treatise on Differentiating Consciousness and Wisdom, called "The Ornament of Self-Arisen Realization," is presented. A clear explanation of the words and meanings of the Treatise on Differentiating Consciousness and Wisdom, called "The Ornament of Self-Arisen Realization." I prostrate to the All-Knowing One! The melodious voice of perfect speech, endowed with the three valid cognitions, proclaimed from the throat of glory, O Self-Arisen Victorious One, capable of the path to liberation, I pay homage to you. All phenomena of samsara and nirvana are consciousness, as well as the form of wisdom, the nature of which, is revealed by the essence of the eighty-four thousand collections of teachings. Whoever realizes this will end the cycle of existence. Even a partial understanding and experience, will cause the essence of the nectar in the heart-vase to overflow, and for the sake of cultivating the youth of peace, this extraordinary text should be explained. Having mastered the wisdom of the Buddhas by seeing the suchness of all phenomena without obscuration, and having manifested as the emanation of the Lord of the World, whose activities in making the Buddha's teachings flourish day and night are unparalleled in the three realms. This treatise by Gyalwang All-Knowing Rangjung Dorje (རང་བྱུང་རྡོ་རྗེ།) (Self-Arisen Vajra), concise in words and profound in meaning, will be explained in three parts: the introduction to the composition, the meaning of entering (78) the main text, and the conclusion after completion. The first part has three points: stating the title of the treatise, paying homage, and promising to compose. The first point is: A Treatise on Differentiating Consciousness and Wisdom. As it is said, for sentient beings with delusion, how the eight aggregates of consciousness, the root of samsara, exist; for Buddhas free from delusion, how wisdom, the nature of nirvana, appears; and how these two appear in different forms on the same basis are differentiated. Consciousness can correct the faults of delusion, and wisdom can save to the stainless nature. Because it possesses these two qualities, it is called a treatise. In order to make it easy to find the beginning and the end, and to explain the meaning of the treatise in a concise way, the Venerable One named the treatise based on its meaning and function.

Moreover, the venerable Nagarjuna said: "Samsara is merely conceptual thought; the absence of conceptual thought is liberation." Therefore, the imputation of samsara and nirvana as real is merely a distinction between the defiled and undefiled states of mind with conceptual thought. If one realizes this truth, one will realize the true nature of all phenomena. Secondly: I prostrate to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus it is said, taking "prostration" as the basis for discussion. (79) Who prostrates? Rangjung Dorje, the author of the treatise. When does he prostrate? At the beginning of writing this treatise. To whom does he prostrate? To all the Buddhas who have eliminated the two obscurations of what should be abandoned, the gross and subtle, and have attained the two wisdoms of what should be attained, the stainless wisdoms, and to all the Bodhisattvas who have generated the mind of enlightenment, who have become sons of the Buddhas for the benefit of others, who have gone and remained in the three times. How does he prostrate? With the reverence and faith of the three doors of body, speech, and mind. For what purpose? In order to increase the accumulation of merit in one's own mindstream, to pacify obstacles, so that the work of writing may be completed, and to obtain the happiness of the immediate and the ultimate, the perfection of manifest and definite goodness. As it is said in the Mother of the Conquerors: "Sons and daughters of good family, if anyone says 'I prostrate to the Tathagata,' then all of them will reach the end of suffering." Thirdly: From hearing onwards, to speaking. Thus it is said, although the Lord himself is in the ultimate sense the holder of the Buddha's biography, he manifested as an ordinary person in order to guide the childlike beings to be tamed, taking the stainless discipline of morality as the basis. Initially, he listened impartially to the Dharma from many virtuous friends, who were learned and accomplished masters. In the middle, relying greatly on careful contemplation (80), through reflection, he integrated the meaning of what he had heard into his heart. Finally, in order to genuinely practice and cultivate the meaning of hearing and thinking within, thereby connecting with the fruition, Rangjung Dorje himself, away from external distractions, internal afflictions, secret illusions, and conceptual thoughts, remained absorbed in the many gates of samadhi. In this way, one can truly realize this profound Dharma of liberation from illusion.
