If asked, isn't it refutation? Answer: Here, it is shown by clearly distinguishing the differences. Generally, when appearance, existence, samsara, nirvana are spoken of as bodhicitta, it is in accordance with the Dharma without wavering from the state of one awareness; and considering that the play, ability, and adornment of awareness are self-appearing, it is designated as mind, just like designating the sun's rays as the sun and saying, "Stay at the top of today." Regarding the harm to what is real, there are two: Awareness becoming mind would excessively assume that there are colors and directions, because appearance has colors and directions; and the mind would scatter outward, and appearance would contract inward, thus causing mutual confusion; and when oneself dies, the outer world and beings die simultaneously, etc., which are all harmed by very excessive reasoning. The scriptures also harm, as it is said in the Mirror of the Mind of Samantabhadra: "To think that appearance is mind is to deviate from me." And in Self-Arisen Awareness it says: "Why do you cling to manifoldness as mind? All manifoldness is born from arising, will the fruit of Buddhahood arise and change? Sentient beings cannot become Buddhas. For example, black charcoal, even if polished, will not become white. Therefore, sentient beings in delusion, even if they meditate and practice, will not become Buddhas." And in the Tantra of the Gathering of Definitive Meaning it says: "The fools who have not seen the definitive meaning say that appearance is their own mind, like turning copper into gold." Nowadays, some who pretend to understand Dzogchen, and some practitioners of the common vehicle, without distinguishing, think that appearance is their own mind, and they are speaking of a great mistake. Mind and bodhicitta are not the same. Mind is the adventitious defilement of the three realms, including the eight consciousnesses and mental factors. Bodhicitta is the self-arisen wisdom of awareness, without substance or characteristics, the dharmadhatu of all samsara and nirvana. Here, because the ability of bodhicitta is not played out, appearance and existence appear as bodhicitta, which is merely applying the name of the result to the cause. Know that what appears as samsara and nirvana is the ability of awareness. Know that awareness itself is not established in either samsara or nirvana, and the basis of appearance is unceasing. Know that the clear appearance without object appearance, which is not established as mind or as something other than mind, is the empty-clear, groundless, primordially pure. At the time of liberation, ability and play are without basis, like waking up from a dream, naturally pure, and self-aware wisdom is the unchanging dharmakaya.

Now, first, without moving from the original state, one should recognize the purity of things and characteristics. Such a distinction, nowadays, there is no one other than me who can make it. Some consider it as mind, some consider it as something else. Here, even one's own school has not resolved it, because it acknowledges the manifestation of ability, play, and adornment as its essence. Among these, ability is the power of awareness, that is, the separate manifestation of samsara and nirvana, just as the single ray of sunlight opens the lotus and closes the night-blooming lotus. Play is playing with the melody of awareness, like a flame playing with light, or the sun playing with rays. Adornment is the spontaneous manifestation of self-appearance, adorning the face of awareness when it appears, like a rainbow in the sky, and the adornment of the sun, moon, planets, and stars. These are also mentioned in the 'All-Illuminating': 'The essence of ability is unceasing.' And, 'Unceasing, the wealth of non-duality, I have shown as the essence of play.' And, 'Therefore, beauty is called adornment.' Incidentally, the explanation with elaboration has been completed. Now, to show that awareness itself is not established anywhere: Like that, just as the nature of objects is without appearance, so too is the nature of the object-possessing bodhicitta. The essence of non-existence is like the sky, one should know it to be beyond speech and thought. The essence of awareness, the basis for the arising of samsara and nirvana, is not established anywhere, like the sky. In the 'All-Creating Tantra', it says: 'Bodhicitta is the nature of the sky, all dharmas are bodhicitta, its example, all examples are the nature of the sky.' The way of abiding in the nature of non-existence is: In the essence of meaning, self-born wisdom, without cause and effect, the abyss of samsara is cut off. Without good or bad, samsara and nirvana are equal in expanse. Without confusion or obscuration, the three realms are cut off from acceptance and rejection. The nature of awareness, clear, open, and naked, is without cause and effect, so it is completely liberated from the fall into samsara and the abyss of happiness and suffering. All of samsara arises from the unceasing appearance of cause and effect, but the nature of awareness itself is not established in any cause and effect, therefore there is no confusion or obscuration, no good or bad. No matter how samsara and nirvana appear, they are equal in expanse in the face of awareness, because they have never actually existed, so there is peace of mind. In the state where awareness does not exist anywhere, although it seems to appear and abide in some way, it has never actually existed, it is primordially liberated. Merely realizing that and abiding in one's own ground, even if one clings to it as becoming a Buddha.
