It is said that because it transcends actions, it is not empty. (Explained from the Sutra of the Precious Garland, note.) Therefore, if something is not present somewhere, then it is empty of that, which is not properly understood. If something is extra there, then it is always present there, which is known as it truly is. It is said that these two verses show the characteristic of emptiness as non-perverted, in order to be free from the extremes of addition and defamation. Then, how do the dharmas of samsara and the dharmas of nirvana exist for such a category? The dharmas of samsara are like clouds on the sun, having the relationship of obscuration and obscurer. The dharmas of nirvana are like rays of light, having the same essence. For a while, in the dharmadhatu that is the basis, the dependent, defiled dharmas of samsara, when cleared away by the antidote, the way the dharmas of nirvana manifest, should be understood in this way. The dharmas of samsara are adventitious, and the qualities are naturally unconditioned. Therefore, faults are adventitious and qualities are naturally inherent. Just as before, so it is later, it is the unchanging nature of dharma. It is said that, therefore, in the nature of the dharmadhatu, which is like the sky and unchangeable, for countless lifetimes, through the karma and habitual tendencies of endless samsara, the way of taking and abandoning the aggregates is: Just as in all the worlds, the sky has arising and ceasing, similarly, in the unconditioned realm, the faculties also have arising and ceasing. It is said that, although the faculties appear to arise and cease from karma and conditions, the element is without arising and ceasing, just as the fire at the end of an eon burns the world, but cannot burn the sky. Just as the sky has never been burned by fires, similarly, it is not burned by the fire of death, sickness, and old age. It is said that, therefore, all birth, death, happiness, and suffering arise from karma and afflictions. And these arise from the non-virtuous conceptualizations and ignorance. It depends on the basis of the mind's luminosity, just as the world depends on the sky. Earth depends on water, water depends on wind, and wind completely abides in the sky. And the sky does not abide in the elements of wind, water, and earth. It
