The paths of the outsiders, because they fall into the extremes of permanence and annihilation, do not lead to liberation. Therefore, I will not differentiate them here; a brief explanation is sufficient. The paths of the insiders, divided into the three vehicles, are known as the Hearer Vehicle, the Solitary Realizer Vehicle, and the Bodhisattva Vehicle. Among these, first, the Hearer Vehicle is for those who are weary of the suffering of samsara and seek liberation for their own benefit. The way to enter this path is as stated in the Treasury of Knowledge: \"Those who possess discipline, learning, and thought should diligently apply themselves to meditation.\" Therefore, one first binds one's mind with the discipline of any of the seven classes of individual liberation vows. The seven classes are the fully ordained monk and nun, the novice monk and nun, the probationary nun—these five are on the side of the ordained—and the lay male and female followers, these two are on the side of the householders, totaling seven. The one-day vows are taken only occasionally, so they are not regarded as a basis for qualities. Thus, one who abides in discipline becomes skilled in the aggregates, elements, sense bases, the twelve links of dependent origination, what is and is not possible, and the faculties. Then, one enters the practice of the path, mainly engaging in acceptance and rejection through the four noble truths. Among these, the truth of suffering is like a disease, caused by external or internal conditions in body, speech, and mind, resulting in various unpleasant pains, illnesses, and harms. As an example, in order to abandon the five aggregates of the time of samsara and the clinging associated with them, one engages in diligent practice, thereby entering into the knowledge of their nature. The truth of origin is like the cause of disease, namely the actions of karma, which, like a painter, are the cause of producing suffering. One should abandon the three poisons of attachment, aversion, and ignorance, and so forth. The truth of cessation is like the happiness of being liberated from disease, like the joy of being freed from the abyss of samsara or an epidemic. One should strive to achieve the supreme result. The truth of the path is like medicine, and one engages in meditation in order to be liberated from the disease of suffering. As stated in the Sublime Continuum: \"Disease is to be known, the cause of disease is to be abandoned.\"" } ] ============================================================

To attain that state, just as one should rely on medicine. The cause of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the path to cessation. Should be known, should be abandoned, should be realized, should be cultivated. As it is said, the reasoning is the same. That is, on the first four paths, one meditates through seven groups. As the Treasury says: The seven groups in order, are with the initial actions, those in accordance with ascertainment, and are well distinguished into meditation and seeing. Therefore, in the small accumulation path, one cultivates the four mindfulnesses; in the medium, the four right abandonments; in the great, the four legs of miraculous power. In the joining path, warmth and peak, the five faculties; in forbearance and supreme dharma, the five powers; in the seeing path, the seven branches of enlightenment; in the meditation path, the eightfold noble path. One meditates. The first is the small accumulation path, the beginning of all paths, where the initial practitioner, to counter attachment to one's own and others' bodies, cultivates mindfulness of the body. That is, to counter general desire, one contemplates one's own and others' bodies and all appearances as skeletons, thereby eliminating attachment. The Treasury says: A skeleton is for all those with attachment. As a specific counter, one cultivates eight contemplations, such as contemplating swelling, contemplating lividity, contemplating decay, and so on. Having separated from attachment, sometimes through mindfulness of the body, one contemplates the body like a water tree, and so on. Then one cultivates mindfulness of feelings, for the three feelings of pleasure, pain, and neutral, one cultivates the thought of suffering, and the thought of being without essence like a water tree. The Sutra says: Whatever feeling there may be, all of it should be recognized as suffering. Then one cultivates mindfulness of mind, through the manner of calm abiding and insight, holding the mind on the movement of breath in and out, pacifying thoughts, the continuum of mind is the conventional truth, and if analyzed, it is the ultimate truth without a moment, in this state, one cultivates the meaning of selflessness. Then one cultivates mindfulness of dharmas, for the dharmas included by formations and consciousness, one contemplates the nature of all inner and outer entities as selflessness, as well as impermanence, like illusion, and so on.
