This is how it is done. That is, form, feeling, perception, etc., are meditated upon as being without essence of body, feeling, and mind. The two, formation and consciousness, are meditated upon through the establishment of mindfulness of the Dharma. Thus, when the afflictions of manifest clinging to the phenomena gathered by the five aggregates are reversed in various ways, the gross objects to be abandoned are overcome, and one enters the higher path. As it is said in the Treasury [Abhidharmakośa], "Body, feeling, mind, and phenomena, are well examined in two characteristics." Therefore, for both general and specific characteristics, one should meditate individually on the body as being impure, feeling as being suffering, mind as being impermanent, and phenomena as being of the nature of selflessness. Then, when the middling stage of the path of accumulation arises, one strives and meditates in order to prevent unwholesome [qualities] that have not yet arisen from arising, to restrain those that have arisen, to generate wholesome [qualities] that have not yet arisen, and to increase those that have arisen. Therefore, in order to completely abandon all unwholesome aspects, it is called right abandonment. Then, when the great stage of the path of accumulation arises, one meditates on the four concentrations of aspiration, effort, mind, and investigation. That is, in order, one generates a single-pointed aspiration towards a virtuous object, either conventional or ultimate, and meditates; one continuously sustains that state with great effort; one makes the mind single-pointed; and one meditates through the gateway of thoroughly distinguishing the meaning with investigation. From this, various meditative minds are accomplished, and it is called the foot of miraculous power because the means or limbs of miraculous power are accomplished. Then, the path of preparation arises in the continuum. That is, in both the heat and peak stages, one meditates on the five faculties. That is, the five faculties of faith, effort, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom. That is, one meditates with faith in the sixteen aspects of the four truths, in a manner of believing. With effort, one generates joy; with mindfulness, one does not forget the discriminations of the objects; with concentration, one holds the mind single-pointedly on the object; and with wisdom, one meditates in a manner of distinguishing the objects. As it is said in the Treasury [Abhidharmakośa], "This is the field of activity of the four truths, the sixteen aspects."

Above warmth, the peak is also the same as that. Thus it is. What are the sixteen? Impermanence, suffering, emptiness, selflessness, these are the four aspects of the truth of suffering. Cause, arising, production, the nature of condition, these are the four aspects of the truth of origin. Selflessness, peace, excellence, solitude, these are the four aspects of the truth of cessation. Path, reason, practice, निश्चित निर्याण (Tibetan, Devanagari: निश्चित निर्याण, Romanized Sanskrit: Niscita Niryana, Literal meaning: Definite Departure), these are the four aspects of the truth of the path. Then, in the two, forbearance and the highest dharma, one cultivates the five powers. That is, from the aspect of the ability to destroy afflictions being particularly increased, it is called power. The method of cultivation is in accordance with the faculties. The method of cultivating the aspects of the four truths is that from that, forbearance also arises. As it says in the Ornament for Clear Realization, "The two are thus," temporarily, the four aspects of the suffering of desire realm, plus the four aspects of the suffering of the two upper realms combined into one group, totaling eight. Similarly, the three, origin, cessation, and path, each have eight, so the method of cultivating thirty-two aspects in total. Or, between warmth, peak, and the lesser forbearance, add the seven parts together, and counting them, there are two hundred and twenty-four aspects. In the middle forbearance, on top of the thirty-two, abandoning the four of the path, one cultivates twenty-eight. Then, abandoning the four of the path of the desire realm, one cultivates twenty-four. Again, abandoning the four of the cessation of the two upper realms, one cultivates twenty. Then, abandoning the four of the cessation of the desire realm, one cultivates sixteen. Again, abandoning the four of the origin of the upper realms, one cultivates twelve. Then, abandoning the four of the origin of the desire realm, one cultivates eight. Again, abandoning the four of the suffering of the upper realms, one cultivates four. Thus, when cultivating the four aspects of the suffering of the desire realm, there are two types of individuals: those who are more inclined to craving and those who are more inclined to views. The former is abandoning any one of the cessation and path of the four truths of the desire realm, and cultivating three. Then, abandoning the last two, one cultivates the two, suffering and origin. For these two types of people, there are two types of decline: those who decline due to the pride of "I am" and those who decline due to laziness in clinging to abandonment. The former cultivates the aspect of impermanence twice, and the middle forbearance is completed. Thus, in the stage of middle forbearance, removing those that are abandoned, counting those that remain to be cultivated, there are a total of one hundred.
