Some establish it as the stage of ordinary beings. When Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas enter the path, that person is a noble being. The first path is to cultivate the qualities of the four mindfulnesses. If cultivating the four mindfulnesses turns one into an ordinary being, then at the ten bhūmis, one would also become an ordinary being, because the stage of the Pratyekabuddha also has the four mindfulnesses, so there is the fault of becoming an ordinary being. Then, the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas at the time of cultivating the four mindfulnesses should become Mahāyāna noble beings. If they are noble beings, it is because they cultivate the Mahāyāna four mindfulnesses. Relative to the Mahāyāna, the characteristic of a noble being is not established, because the abandonment and realization are not equal to the Mahāyāna noble beings, so the first reason is not established, therefore they will not become Mahāyāna noble beings. The Hīnayāna is a noble being. Even if one cultivates the Mahāyāna four mindfulnesses, one will not become a Mahāyāna noble being, because the pervasion is also not established. When Bodhisattvas are said to purify the Buddha-fields, the fault that the Bodhisattva should become a fully enlightened Buddha, etc., is what is pointed out. Therefore, when Śrāvaka, Pratyekabuddha, and Arhat enter the Mahāyāna path, they must enter from the small accumulation path of the Mahāyāna, because the Buddha of the Mahāyāna must be established as possessing the five paths and the reversal of the Mahāyāna path. The third meaning is that the Bodhisattva path has three aspects: the nature of the support lineage, how those with lineage generate the mind, and the order of how to traverse the path in that way. First, as stated in the Gaṇḍavyūha Sūtra: "O sons of the Victorious Ones, the lineage of the Bodhisattva is said to be the one that fully embraces the realm of phenomena, is as vast as the sky, and is naturally luminous. The Bodhisattvas who abide therein are born into the lineage of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, who have appeared in the past, future, and present." And from the Uttaratantra: "Whatever is the luminous nature of the mind, that is immutable like the sky." Therefore, the realm of phenomena, which is naturally pure, the ultimate truth, the self-arisen wisdom, when it has defilements, is called the lineage, the element, or the Tathāgatagarbha, and when it is free from defilements, it is called the nature of enlightenment or the Tathāgata. To establish this, there are four meanings: the nature of the lineage, the pervasion of all.

The way to differentiate thoroughly is to demonstrate the validity of showing the lineage. Firstly, in the Uttaratantra it says, "In this, there is nothing to be removed, nor is there anything to be established. Look directly at the true reality; seeing the true reality, one is liberated." Therefore, the essence of this realm of the heart has no stains to be discarded, as it is naturally radiant and without stain. There are no new qualities to be acquired from the outside, as the qualities are spontaneously perfect. It says in the same text, "Because it possesses purity and defilements, and because it is completely free from defilements and pure, therefore, the qualities of the stainless Buddha are such that, even in the state of ordinary beings who are completely afflicted, wisdom is without differentiation, and the nature of reality exists without any difference between before and after. This state is inconceivable," as Asanga explained in the commentary. "Because of the undifferentiated nature of reality, it is spontaneously perfect and non-conceptual." So it is. The essence of that meaning is the correct view. When one sees that and is liberated from the sudden stains of affliction, like being enveloped in mist, although the manifestation of the previously existing qualities is called enlightenment, it is not newly born. Therefore, in relation to the essence of the realm or the heart, it is empty of characteristics that include differentiation with respect to stains and faults, but it is not empty of the qualities that are inherently present. As it says in the same text, "It is characterized by differentiation; the essence is empty of adventitious stains; it is characterized by non-differentiation; it is not empty of the supreme Dharma." And, in its commentary, it says, "What does this indicate? Because in the Tathāgatagarbha, which is naturally completely pure, there is no reason to remove the causes of complete affliction, since freedom from adventitious stains is its nature. There is no reason to establish any cause of complete purification here, since the undifferentiated Dharma, the pure nature of reality, is its nature. Therefore, the Tathāgatagarbha is empty of all the coverings of affliction, knowing that it is separate from differentiation and non-differentiation, and the inconceivable Buddha-dharmas, inseparable from non-differentiation, are like the sands of the Ganges.
