It becomes the cause. The basis of the name is that for each of the four truths of suffering, origin, cessation, and path, there are four: the forbearance of the knowledge of dharma, the knowledge of dharma, the forbearance of subsequent knowledge, and subsequent knowledge, making a total of sixteen moments with their retinue. If considered from the perspective of the ground, the first is the Extremely Joyful Ground. As it is said in the Ornament for Clear Realization: "In the truths such as suffering, the knowledge of dharma and subsequent knowledge, the moments of forbearance and knowledge are sixteen." That is, when one initially obtains transcendental wisdom, one obtains a great joy that surpasses the previous one, hence it is called Extremely Joyful. As it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Being very close to enlightenment, and seeing the accomplishment of the meaning of sentient beings, joy arises exceedingly, therefore it is called Joyful." If divided, they are the nature of the sixteen moments in the order of the four truths. Among the five special qualities, the first, the special quality of the antidote, is that the four forbearances of dharma are the uninterrupted path that eradicates the seeds of what is to be abandoned by seeing from the root. The four knowledges of dharma are the path of liberation that is the dependent antidote. The four subsequent forbearances and the four subsequent knowledges are the special path of the antidote that extends the connection. That is, for suffering, there is the knowledge of dharma; for origin, cessation, and path, there are the four knowledges of dharma. Just as the essence of one intellect is divided into four in dependence on the aspects of the four truths, the subsequent forbearances and subsequent knowledges of those are also similar. In the special quality of abandonment, there are two: essence and divisions. The essence is the liberation from the portions of the two obscurations, afflictive and cognitive, that are to be abandoned by seeing, to the extent that they have become one's own share. As it is said in the Middle Extremes: "The obscuration of afflictions and the obscuration of knowledge are taught as two. There, all obscurations are eliminated, and from their exhaustion, liberation is desired." That is, their essence is, as it is said in the Treatise on the Lineage of the Sugatas: "Whatever conceptual thoughts such as miserliness are considered the obscuration of afflictions. Whatever conceptualization of the three spheres is considered the obscuration of knowledge." Therefore, whatever is non-virtuous that does not completely pacify the mind, or the essence of miserliness and so forth that is unstated and not obscured, is the afflictive obscuration. Whatever virtuous contaminated or uncontaminated unstated essence of the conceptualization of the grasper and the grasped, the object and the subject, that is not separated from the clinging to truth in the three spheres, is the cognitive obscuration.

Of these, the afflictive obscurations that are conceptually imputed are abandoned by the path of seeing, while those that are innate are abandoned by the path of meditation. Among the cognitive obscurations, the gross conceptualizations of grasping at a subject and object are abandoned by the path of seeing, while the subtle ones are abandoned by the path of meditation. Secondly, the categories are threefold: the definition of what is abandoned by the path of seeing, the divisions, and how they are abandoned. First, the definition is: whatever is conceptually imputed and becomes an obstacle to the path of seeing. The divisions are threefold. From the perspective of their nature, there are six: view, desire, anger, pride, ignorance, and doubt. From the perspective of how they wrongly engage, there are five views: the view of the aggregates as a self, the view of holding to extremes, wrong view, the view of holding views as supreme, and the view of holding ethical conduct and asceticism as supreme. And there are five non-views: desire, anger, pride, ignorance, and doubt, making a total of ten. From the perspective of the object, realm, and how they wrongly engage, there are one hundred and twelve things to be abandoned by the path of seeing. That is, when the five views engage with the four truths, such as the truth of suffering in the desire realm, the five non-views also engage accordingly, each having ten, so there are forty. In the four truths of the two upper realms (form and formless realms), nine, excluding anger, engage. Therefore, in the four truths of the realm of meditative concentration, there are thirty-six, and in the four truths of the formless realm, there are also thirty-six, totaling one hundred and twelve. As stated in the Compendium of Topics, "The one hundred and twelve afflictions are the category of afflictions to be abandoned by seeing." The way to abandon them is: the seeds of what is abandoned by the path of seeing are abandoned by the stages of application through suppression, and by eradication through the tolerance of knowing the Dharma, etc. That is, the seed of what is abandoned by the path of seeing, which gathers simultaneously with the direct cause of the tolerance of knowing the Dharma of the four truths, acts as the proximate cause. The direct cause acts as the co-operative condition, and the seed that is simultaneous with the Dharma tolerance is produced, which is cut off from its lineage. Without needing other destructive factors, it is destroyed in an instant. Therefore, in the second instant, one obtains the transformation of being liberated from the seed of what is abandoned by the path of seeing of the Dharma knowledge. The four subsequent tolerances and the four subsequent knowledges are the antidotes to the subtlest objects to be abandoned, and arise after the first two wisdoms of the path of seeing, the ground.
