May I never in all my lifetimes delight in harming others. May the fruit of sentient beings' suffering ripen on me, and may the fruit of my virtue ripen on them, as explained in the scriptures and commentaries. Completely pure conduct is as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: When a prince acts, in whatever way the various perceptions of the senses arise, in that way, with appropriate and harmonious words, he manifests it for the benefit of sentient beings. The meaning is: One should know that the completely pure conduct is like the conduct of Samantabhadra. When a Bodhisattva enters a room, he should generate the thought that all sentient beings may attain the city of liberation. When sleeping, may I attain the body of a Buddha. When dreaming, may I realize all dharmas as dreams. When waking up, may I awaken from ignorance. When rising, may I attain the form body of a Buddha. When dressing, may I wear the clothes of shame and embarrassment. When tying the belt, may the roots of virtue be connected. When sitting on the cushion, may I attain the vajra seat. One should generate such thoughts and practice accordingly. Breathing in and out is a preliminary method for practicing samadhi, subduing discursive thoughts. By focusing the mind on the passage where the breath goes in and out of the mouth and nose, discursive thoughts are subdued. The conventional aspect of Bodhicitta is the four immeasurables such as loving-kindness, and the ultimate aspect is to meditate on emptiness without recollection, thought, or distraction. As stated in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: When discursive thoughts are pacified, one should meditate on Bodhicitta. Secondly, among the three ways of meditating specifically, one practices the four mindfulnesses in the small stage of the accumulation path. The first mindfulness of the body is: in equipoise, one meditates like the sky, and in post-meditation, one meditates on impurity, illusion, and so on. In the mindfulness of feeling, in equipoise, one meditates on non-arising, and in post-meditation, whatever one feels is suffering, and one meditates on it as being without essence like a water bubble. In the mindfulness of mind, in equipoise, one meditates on emptiness of inherent existence, and in post-meditation, one meditates on non-arising, non-ceasing, and non-abiding. In the mindfulness of dharmas, in equipoise, one meditates on equality, and in post-meditation,

One should also meditate on the eight similes of illusion and so forth. Moreover, in the small stage of the path of accumulation, by meditating on the four mindfulnesses, one enters the four truths of the path of seeing. Thus, first, by knowing the body as suffering, one enters the knowledge of the truth of suffering. Second, by knowing feelings as suffering, one enters the abandonment of the truth of the origin. By meditating on the impermanence of the mind, one enters the realization of the cessation of the clinging to permanence, which is the truth of cessation. By meditating on the selflessness of phenomena, one is liberated from clinging to self and enters the cultivation of the path, which is the truth of the path. As the Madhyāntavibhāga states: "To eliminate bad states and the cause of craving, to make a basis and not be confused, one should meditate on mindfulness to enter the four truths." Thus it is. In the middle stage of the path of accumulation, one strives to prevent unwholesome dharmas that have not arisen from arising, and to cut off the continuity of those that have arisen. One strives to generate wholesome dharmas that have not arisen, and to increase those that have arisen, and one meditates on the antidote of selflessness and illusion or dreams, etc. As it says in that very text: "Having fully understood all the unfavorable factors and all the antidotes, diligence arises in four aspects to abandon the unwholesome." Thus it is. In the great stage of the path of accumulation, one also meditates on the four legs of miraculous power. By meditating inwardly on the single-pointed samādhi of calm abiding and insight combined, one accomplishes the desired meaning of the divine eye, clairvoyance, miraculous powers, and so forth. As the Madhyāntavibhāga states: "Abiding in that state of fitness, all meanings are accomplished." Thus it is. Here, the reason why it is called the legs of miraculous power is that miraculous powers and so forth are accomplished through the power of the mind's fitness for meditation. These are the four samādhis of aspiration, effort, mind, and investigation. Thus, first, when one gathers the mind on a single object of focus and abides steadily, if discursive thoughts arise, one immediately does not let them scatter, but gathers the mind single-pointedly on the object of focus, and meditates in this way again and again. As the Sūtrālaṃkāra states: "Having fixed the mind on the object itself, do not let its continuity be distracted. Having quickly realized distraction, one should again fix it on that." Thus it is. Second, in the path of joining, there are two aspects: the basis and the nature. There are two bases: the basis of the body is any of the five types of beings. The basis of the mind is the meditative ground.
