The four aspects of "na" are represented by the lotus, the bee, the chaff, and the mud. The nature of ignorance obscuring the essence in the continuum of the Arhats of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas is illustrated by the single example of a poor man's treasure underground. The two stains of the Mahayana path of seeing to be abandoned in the continuum of ordinary learners, and the stains of the path of meditation to be abandoned in the continuum of the noble ones, are represented by the two examples of the husk and the rotten cloth. The stains of the ten grounds of the Bodhisattvas on the grounds are also the stains that rely on the seven impure grounds and below, and the stains that rely on the three pure grounds, are represented by the two examples of the womb and the gold in the mud. Thus it is said: Attachment, hatred, and delusion, all arising with fierce habitual patterns, and the stains of seeing and meditation to be abandoned, relying on the impure and pure grounds, the nine kinds of stains are shown by examples such as the lotus bud. The divisions of the near afflictions are countless and endless. These nine afflictions such as attachment, etc., in short, in order, are truly shown by the nine examples such as the lotus bud. These stains make children, Arhats, learners, and those with learning, impure in order by four and one, and two and two. Thus it is said. Secondly, combining similar dharmas is to show faults by nine examples, thereby knowing that the chambers of the nine stains are to be abandoned. Just as the lotus arises from the mud, it is pleasing when it appears in front, but later it is no longer pleasing, so is the joy of attachment. Just as the living bee is very disturbed like a spear piercing, similarly the arising of hatred also causes pain in the heart. Just as the essence of rice etc. is obscured by the outer chaff, similarly seeing the meaning of the essence is obscured by the five chambers of ignorance. Just as impurity is incompatible, so too those with attachment, because it is the cause of relying on desire, all arising is like impurity. Just as the obscuration of jewels is like not knowing the treasure and not being able to see it, similarly the naturally arising habitual patterns of ignorance are obscured by the earth. Just as sprouts etc. grow in order, the seed breaking the shell, similarly seeing thusness, the abandoned of seeing will turn back.
