Dwelling in the ugly-hued lotus, the Thus-Gone One blazing with a thousand names, Seen by humans with the immaculate divine eye, like extracting from the lotus's core. Likewise, the Bliss-Gone One in the realms of uninterrupted suffering, With the Buddha's eye, beholding the nature of self-dhamma, With unobstructed, boundless, ever-abiding compassion, Liberates us from defilements. Thus it is said. The second example is like honey from bees: Just as a swarm of living beings surrounds honey, Sought after by wise individuals for its meaning, Having seen it, they skillfully separate the swarm of living beings. Likewise, the great sage with the all-knowing eye, Having seen the realm of lineage like honey, Its defilements, like bees, Are completely and utterly exhausted. Thus it is said. The third example is like a fruit within a husk: Just as the essence of a fruit with a husk, Is not to be consumed by people, Whoever seeks food and other meanings, They extract it from the husk. Likewise, as long as the Victorious One is mixed with the defilements of sentient beings, And not liberated from the mixture of defilements, So long the Victorious One does not gather in the three realms. Thus it is said. The fourth example is like gold in mud: Just as the most precious gold of humans, Has fallen into decaying filth, That fearless dharma-nature remains there as such, Even dwelling there for many hundreds of years. The deity with the divine eye, seeing it there, Says to the human, "Here is gold, the supreme jewel, purify it and accomplish what needs to be accomplished with jewels." Likewise, the Able One, seeing the qualities of sentient beings like impure, Defilement-mud, in order to purify that defilement-mud, Pours down the rain of the sacred dharma upon beings. Thus it is said. The fifth example is like a treasure beneath the earth: Just as in the house of a poor person, beneath the earth, There lies an inexhaustible treasure, That person does not know it, and the treasure also, Does not say to him, "I am here." Likewise, the precious treasure contained within the mind, The immaculate, abiding, unshifting dharma-nature also, Because of not realizing it, the suffering of poverty, Is constantly experienced by these beings in many ways.

Oh! Thus it is. The sixth analogy, like a sapling in a bark sheath: Just as in fruits like Amalaka, the existing seed and sapling are the indestructible Dharma, and through conditions like plowing the soil and watering, the qualities of the king of trees are gradually accomplished. Similarly, the Dharma-dhatu goodness contained within the skin sheath of beings' ignorance and other fruits, likewise, relying on those virtuous conditions, gradually transforms into the body of the Sage, the Buddha. Thus it is. The seventh analogy, like a jewel image inside tattered clothes: Just as a Buddha image made of precious jewels, covered by tattered, foul-smelling clothes, is seen by a deity on the road, who, in order to liberate it, speaks of this matter to passersby. Similarly, the Tathagata-nature, obscured by various afflictions since beginningless time, is observed even in animals, and likewise, in order to liberate them, shows skillful means. Thus it is. The eighth analogy, like a lord of men residing in the womb of a wicked woman: Just as some ugly, helpless women reside in a place of helplessness, yet carry the glory of a king in their womb, unaware that a lord of men is in their belly. Existence in samsara is like a helpless home, and impure beings are like women with wombs. What within them can be relied upon? The stainless realm is like the lord of men in her womb. Thus it is. The ninth analogy, like a golden image in mud: Just as a molten golden image inside gradually increases, while the outside is the nature of peaceful earth. Those who see and understand this, in order to refine the inner gold, remove the outer obscurations. Likewise, those of self-nature luminosity and stainlessness suddenly appear, and beings, like sources of jewels, are purified from obscurations, attaining supreme Bodhi. Thus it is. Thus, due to the nine natures that obscure the essence, these nine analogies are spoken. In general, this is an explanation of examples existing in the realm of sentient beings. In particular, for sentient beings who have not yet entered the path, the defilements existing in their continuum are solely the cause of samsara, the karma of merit and non-merit, desire, hatred, ignorance, and the intense arising of the mixture of these three.
