If we roughly divide the tenets of the Lesser Vehicle, there are three: The Sarvastivada school among the Shravakas, when the Buddha passed into Nirvana in the past, a naked ascetic teacher came, and the one who was ordained as a Shravaka by the words "Come here," asked: Is the self of a person the same as or different from the skandhas? Is it both or neither? Although there was no answer, it was understood that something inexpressible existed, so this Dharma was written down, but its view was mixed with that of the heretics, and it acknowledged an inexpressible self. Their treatises hold that the agent of all good and non-good actions, and the enjoyer of the desired and undesired fruits of one's own actions, is the entity of the self that abandons the former skandha and takes the latter. However, this self is not permanent, because it abandons the former birth and takes the latter. Nor is it impermanent, because the self of this life has already enjoyed the actions it has done, and the future self will enjoy the fruits of actions not yet done. If the two become one self, then the fruits of actions will be wasted after being fully enjoyed, and what is to be enjoyed will not yet be enjoyed. Therefore, the enjoyer or the one who will enjoy is the same self, so it is not impermanent either. Therefore, they say that this self exists in the person-self that is inexpressible as either permanent or impermanent. This view is not good, because if permanence is negated, there is no need to prove impermanence; and negating impermanence also depends on the proof of permanence; how can something that is neither permanent nor impermanent exist? It is completely unreasonable. The Vaibhashikas among the Shravakas acknowledge five objects of knowledge with different entities. These are the skandha of form, the skandha of mind, the skandha of mental factors, non-associated compositional factors, and the unconditioned. The first is visible and obstructive form, which is the indivisible particle of earth, water, fire, and wind, the ultimate reality, gathered in a circumscribed space, from which the gross is established. Invisible but obstructive form is the five sense organs: eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body, as well as sound, smell, taste, and touch. Invisible and non-obstructive form is the universal presence of the body, existing like a fire spreading through a forest.
