Thus it is said. To transmigrate to another place is also to transmigrate by taking on the burden of other tasks, and not to perform the arising and ceasing of conditioned phenomena. Even when virtuous deeds and the like are performed, one obtains what is called 'a substance that is not wasted,' but no imprints are left on the mind. Downfalls and antidotes, and so forth, also increase more and more upon being obtained. Even upon obtaining the result, the imprints on the mind are not exhausted; rather, the separation obtained by the exhaustion of subtle elaborations is uncontaminated. The unconditioned is threefold: space, which is separate from tangibility; cessation through analysis, which is destroyed by an antidote; and non-analytical cessation, which does not arise due to the lack of conditions. The three unconditioned phenomena, and the mind consciousness together with its retinue of the truth of the path, are uncontaminated, while the remainder are contaminated, as it is said in the Treasury [Abhidharmakośa]: 'Contaminated and uncontaminated dharmas, all conditioned things except the path, are called contaminated. The uncontaminated is the truth of the path, and the three unconditioned phenomena, namely space and the two cessations.' Thus it is said. Although this accepts that nirvāṇa is peaceful and that all contaminated things are suffering, it abandons the absence of self in all dharmas and the impermanence of all conditioned things, as previously explained. That is not truly reasonable. For example, there are three points: that atoms are not acceptable as ultimately real entities, that mind and mental factors are not acceptable as lacking self-awareness, and that non-associated compositional factors are not acceptable. Firstly, if it is asserted that gross matter is formed from atoms surrounding a central atom from ten directions, then does the central atom view the atoms in the ten directions with the same face that it uses to view the eastern atom, or does it view the atoms located in other directions with other faces? If the former is the case, no matter how many atoms are accumulated, it is the same as viewing with the face that views the eastern atom, and since they are assembled in the place of the eastern atom, it is not possible to increase the expansion of the area, and thus it will not be possible to form gross matter. If the latter is the case, then in relation to the eastern atom, the central atom has two parts, such as viewer and non-viewer, and therefore it cannot be an indivisible, ultimately real entity.

Secondly, if self-awareness is not accepted, then the agent who cognizes the object of consciousness, that consciousness itself, is not cognized. Therefore, the object to be cognized, such as form, will not be cognized. Just as not cognizing meat itself makes it impossible to cognize its source. Thirdly, if birth, aging, and abiding, which are impermanent, are different from conditioned phenomena, then conditioned phenomena will become unborn, un-abiding, un-aging, and permanent, because negating a negation becomes an affirmation. The Sravaka Sautrantikas agree with the Vaibhashikas and most treatises, but in particular, regarding the bases of form previously mentioned, non-revealing form is the continuous mind of abandonment, etc. Because it is not form, but arises from what has form and relies on what has form, it is considered to be form. The remaining sense faculties are the cause of the owner of the first form's consciousness, and the objects also establish an image in consciousness, so they are considered to be the objective cause. Atoms are indivisible, adhesive, and non-touching aggregates, from which grossness is produced. Mind and mental factors, the basis of the five sense consciousnesses and its retinue of mental factors, such as form, etc., focus on the five objects. Even though the five objects are not seen, just as a person's face establishes its own image in a mirror, the consciousness of the object arises by establishing an image similar to itself in the second moment. In the present moment, the previous moment establishes an image in a hidden place, so in the present moment, an image similar to itself appears. The future is established by the present establisher externally, so consciousness appears as the image of the object, and experiencing similarity is called knowing the object. As it is said in the Pramanavarttika: When similarity is experienced, the knowing of the object is expressed. And, regarding the side of consciousness with an image, although those two are actually different, because it is similar to an image, it is possible to perceive it as merely imputed. Thus, they accept having an image. Object-knowing consciousness is called object-knowing consciousness because it focuses on the object. Consciousnesses in that moment are self-aware and experience being clear, because they experience themselves, so it is the characteristic of self-awareness. Because it clearly experiences itself, appearing as similar is the object. Therefore, of all consciousnesses,

"The object of focus, experience, and essence are different." Thus it is said. The appearance of two moons, etc., although the image of two moons appears in consciousness, there is no creator of the image—two moons—in the external world, so it is called delusion. The Sutra School does not consider the object to be false, so it is a delusion. For the consciousness of mind and its attendant mental factors, the direct perception of mind is to give form through the second moment of the object of sense consciousness, and because it is similar to this, it grasps the meaning. In dreams, the images of horses and cattle appear, and in conceptual consciousness, the general characteristics of past, present, and nature are mixed and appear unclearly. Although appearance is the nature of consciousness, it is a delusion because there is no creator of the image in the external world. Self-awareness, which clearly experiences all consciousness, is not a delusion. Non-associated formations are also like the state of a fist when the palms are folded, and are the state of form, mind, and mental factors, so they will not become other entities from these three. Obtaining is the state of the mind obtaining habits. The three samadhis are the state in which mind and mental factors cease in the body. The life faculty is the state in which form, mind, and mental factors have equal shares. Similarity is also the state in which these three things are similar. Birth is also the state of obtaining these three things that did not exist before. Aging is also the state of these three things changing. Abiding is also the state of these three things continuing to exist. Impermanence is also the state of these three things ceasing. An ordinary being is also the state of not having obtained the Dharma of the noble ones of these three things. Entering, etc., is also the state of cause and effect of these three things. The three, such as collections of names, are the state of the words of sound. The three unconditioned dharmas, like the child of a barren woman, are completely non-existent, so they are not entities. They say. The six unreasonableness based on these aspects are: it is unreasonable that the external object is not the ultimate truth, it is unreasonable that the coarse appearance is not the nature of consciousness, it is unreasonable that the meaning of the creator of the image cannot be established, it is unreasonable that the mind does not exist at all during samadhi, it is unreasonable that the general characteristic is not the object of realization, and it is unreasonable that the nature of sound itself cannot be the expresser. The first is distinction.
