They are the pleasures of images, etc. If one enjoys these, that is knowledge. The way of enjoyment is that on one side of the mind's mirror facing outward, the images of objects such as sounds appear. On the side facing inward, the images of knowledge appear. It is considered that the mixing of these two is the meaning of enjoyment. What appears in the mind is known by the person. Just as milk, though without consciousness, is the cause of the growth of a calf, similarly, the chief (Prakriti) becomes the cause of the growth of the person (Purusha). Thus, in order for the person to draw near and enjoy, the chief (Prakriti) enters intensely, just as a dance performance is done so that the spectators may be fulfilled. Thus, the fault of not understanding such meanings is that one grasps the nature of the chief (Prakriti) and its temporary changing aspects as the self, and by grasping them as changing, one becomes inverted and wanders in samsara. When nature enters, qualities are obscured by darkness, and therefore, with an inverted mind, the unwise think, "I have done it." There is also no power to stabilize the root. Moreover, this person (Purusha) is in reality of a pure nature of thought. Because of not understanding such a nature, the deluded constantly wander in samsara. The twenty-four transformations of the chief (Prakriti) appear conventionally like illusions. By clinging to them as the self and grasping them as true, one wanders in samsara. The nature of the self, being free from action and agent, permanent, pervasive, and unwavering, is the ultimate truth. Those who know this and do not waver from that state are considered to be liberated. The benefit of knowing these meanings is the attainment of liberation. Just by knowing these twenty-five principles, whether one abides with matted hair or a topknot, or whatever attire, wherever one delights to dwell, liberation will occur; there is no doubt about this. Secondly, the Maheshvara school: The great god Maheshvara taught many tantras, from which the disciples are the Lakulisha and the Kashyapa. Formerly, a sage was entrusted to guard Uma. He developed attachment to Uma and, fearing to fall from his asceticism, he gazed at Uma's foot and accomplished his asceticism. Therefore, the rational view composed by the one called Lakulisha is called

Those who rely on the treatises of the Samkhya school are called Samkhyas. Those who rely on the treatises of the Vaisheshika school, the "Vaisheshika Sutras" composed by Kanada, who practiced asceticism by eating only grains of rice, are called Vaisheshikas. These people believe that all the happiness and suffering of beings, samsara and liberation, are caused by Ishvara's displeasure and pleasure. This being has no wisdom; I have no autonomy over my own happiness and suffering. Sent by Ishvara, one either falls into a precipice or goes to the heavens. So it is. Moreover, whatever is offered at the time of offering and giving is obtained in this life, and in the next life, one is reborn in the heavens as my retinue. As it is said: "The Brahmin becomes a Brahmin if he desires, the Kshatriya becomes a Kshatriya if he desires, and one becomes wealthy if one desires wealth. Thus, one should properly perform excellent offerings and giving." So it is. They say that liberation is attained by burning one's own body as an offering to please the gods. Those who hold these tenets are called: Ishvaravadins, Ulukapanthis, and the Six Categories. These people believe that all philosophical tenets are analyzed by wisdom into six categories and gathered together, therefore they rely on the aspect of reason. The six categories are: substance, quality, action, generality, particularity, and inherence. So it is. There are nine substances: self, time, direction, mind, and space are the five permanent substances; earth, water, fire, and wind are the four impermanent substances. The qualities that depend on substance are twenty-five. Thirteen depend on the substance of self: pleasure, pain, indifference, dharma, non-dharma, created, force of effort, and the six consciousnesses. Seven depend on time and direction: number and magnitude, conjunction and action, otherness and non-otherness, and separateness. There are five qualities: sound is the quality of space, smell is the quality of earth, taste is the quality of water, touch is the quality of wind, and color is the quality of fire. There are five actions: lifting and lowering, stretching and contracting, and going. There are two generalities: universal and particular. Particularity is the characteristic of not mixing with each other. Inherence is what connects substance and quality. Moreover, the self is permanent, singular, all-pervasive, belongs to the continuum of sentient beings, and is the enjoyer; therefore, it is material and possesses five characteristics.
