It should be understood that 'zhi' (calmness, quiescence) refers to all knowable things that have not realized the unborn nature of suchness. Some Madhyamikas who adhere to the conventional truth assert in accordance with the Vaibhashikas that objects of grasping and the grasper arising simultaneously are born from the preceding collection of causes that closely assemble. Even all appearances of the grasped aspect in non-conceptual consciousness are true as mere illusions in external objects. Some others acknowledge the Sutra-following Madhyamikas, asserting that although external objects themselves do not actually appear in consciousness, they impart their own image to consciousness, so that when consciousness arises in an image similar to the object, the object is cognized, and the object is fully experienced through the manner of focusing. The grasped and grasper existing at different times exist conventionally. Some others say that the Yogachara Madhyamikas conventionally hold that all that appears in consciousness is the substance of consciousness, and there is no external object. This is in accordance with the aspected ones. Some others say that just as the grasped aspect appears in dreams, and upon awakening, the appearance of hair-nets, the appearance of a double moon, and universals, etc., are neither objects nor substances of consciousness, so too, what is known to worldly people as objects, such as mountains, houses, men, women, vases, and cloths, etc., are empty of both external objects and substances of consciousness. From beginningless time, due to the imprints of ignorance, they are merely the appearance of non-existence. Therefore, conventionally existing objects are merely happiness and other mental factors that appear as the grasped aspect. Although explained in various ways, like the Shravaka Vaibhashikas, some disagree, asserting that gross objects composed of aggregated atoms have characteristics, and that mind and mental factors lack self-awareness. However, in essence, some similarities exist, such as not accepting appearances as consciousness, and asserting that they arise from their own previous causes. Although they do not accept self-awareness as asserted by the Mind-Only school, they do acknowledge a mere awareness that is not distinguished by affirmations or negations of existence, as stated in the commentary: 'By the self-knowing wisdom of each individual.' There are two kinds of valid cognition for determining: determining the conventional truth.

The valid cognition that determines the ultimate truth is obtained by the valid cognition that determines what can be measured by the reasoning that examines the ultimate examinable, and even if it is realized by the non-conceptual wisdom in the form of each individual's own knowledge, ordinary individuals determine it by the reasoning wisdom that follows the logic of inference. That is also determined by the valid cognition of perception or inference that enters into one aspect of appearance by making the distinction of the object of dharma neutral and taking only the general object of the class as the basis. In this way, when the true entity is negated only in the object of the class, and emptiness, free from elaboration, is determined to be measurable by the wisdom that examines the ultimate, the imputation is cut off from all the distinctions of the object, such as form and happiness, which are the distinctions of the class. They are for realizing without abandoning only the object that can be realized as the pervaded of emptiness. What is negated on that object of dharma? The object to be negated is not to accept existence. However, the sign and inference do not become meaningless, because they make one realize the absence of the object to be negated as absence. That also makes one know the absence of the true entity as absence. For example, even though it is hail, when it is taken as a human being because it is not known, even if the taking as a human being is negated and established as hail, because it is not a human being, even if it is established as hail because it does not have the characteristic of the object to be negated, the characteristic of a human being is not negated. That is also only the negation of clinging to truth, it is not that this alone is negated, it is not atoms and self-awareness and the chief and power, etc., because the general negation negates the particular by implication. Secondly, if the ultimate truth is not accepted as the object of reasoning wisdom, then what appears conventionally is also the same as dreams, etc., which appear clearly as non-existent. Even though it is established only as appearing to arise from its own cause, ultimately, from the subject of the wisdom of self-awareness, the two truths, etc., to all the dharmas of samsara and nirvana." } ] ============================================================
