Since the very substance of that one consciousness is other-consciousness, it is not self-consciousness. If it is not self-consciousness, then there would be a consciousness that exists. If it does not depend, then it cannot be established as self-consciousness either, because self-consciousness depends on other-consciousness. If you say that although self-consciousness and other-consciousness are different aspects of one consciousness, there is no fault because the substance is one, that is not correct. How do you prevent the Samkhya's consciousness from being like a mirror with two faces? Furthermore, if the substance of consciousness is self-consciousness at one time and other-consciousness at another time, then the consciousness of one sentient being would be no different from the Samkhya's, having two faces. Moreover, who can prevent the fault of the dependence of self and other consciousness and the dependent dharma being the same and different in an instant? Therefore, it is not reasonable to assert that there is true and false consciousness in ultimate truth. Secondly, according to the Madhyamika school, the most profound secret of the Buddha's teachings is that although there are five bases of knowable objects, they are all included in the two truths. Therefore, the two great treatises that proclaim that all phenomena are empty of inherent nature are: the establishment of the Svatantrika and the establishment of the Prasangika. The first is also divided into two: the establishment that acknowledges the ultimate truth as the object of cognizing consciousness, and the distinction of not acknowledging it, which must be clarified. The first is divided into two: division and definition. There are five divisions: the basis of division, the meaning of division, etymology, detailed division, and the determination of number. The first is merely the knowable. The second is, in general, that even the mere reversal of the characteristic is not different, which is a synonym of name, different entities, the same entity but different reversals, and the difference of merely negating the same. Here, the first is: As stated in the Noble Sutra Unraveling of Intent, when conventional direct perception is realized, since there is no difference in reversal from it, the ultimate truth is also realized. Therefore, sentient beings in samsara attain nirvana from the beginning. And since there is no difference in reversal from the ultimate truth that does not possess difference, conventional forms, etc., also become empty of difference. And since there is no difference in reversal from the conventional truth that increases afflictions by making anything its object, afflictions also increase by making the ultimate truth its object. And for the conventional

Because conventional truth and its opposite are not different, ultimate truth also cannot be definitively established, which is refuted with four faults. To assert that the essence is the same but the negations are different is to accept illusion as ultimate truth. As it is said in the Prajnaparamita Sutra: "Whatever dharma is fully enlightened, that has neither truth nor falsehood." With the wisdom of equipoise, all dharmas are known as being like the center of the sky, and with the wisdom attained thereafter, all dharmas are known as being like illusions. This contradicts the scriptures. It is also not an appearance empty of truth, because the object of negation is established as ultimate truth. If one posits a non-affirming negation of one and many being separate, then it is not certain to be like a rabbit's horn. If one only posits a non-affirming negation, then it is not certain to be like conventional truth. If one posits a non-affirming negation with a distinction as the reason, saying that the appearance of being inseparable from one and many exists before awareness, then because the distinction existing before awareness contradicts the essence of being separate from one and many, it is not established. Because there is no reasoning, and it would be no different from valid conventional truth, and the examination of what is to be negated is the same, and it would become a view inferior to even the Mind-Only school, etc., it is not reasonable or correct. Even if one asserts that things are different, as it is said in the Samdhinirmocana Sutra: Even if one directly realizes ultimate truth, because it is perceived separately from conventional truth, one will not attain nirvana. And that ultimate truth, which is different in entity from conventional truth, will not become the nature of conventional truth, just as a pot is not the nature of cloth. Because the two truths are different entities, the mere non-establishment of conventional truths will not become ultimate truth, just as the mere non-establishment of a pot will not become cloth. Even at the time of attaining nirvana by directly realizing ultimate truth, because it is perceived separately from conventional truth, one will also become completely afflicted. Therefore, it would not be contradictory for complete affliction and complete purification to occur simultaneously in the continuum of one person, which is said to be a refutation by five reasons. Therefore, ultimate truth is that which is free from all elaboration.
