From the perspective of conventional truth, things cannot be said to be different from or the same as other things; it is merely a difference that negates "oneness." The definition or meaning of the name is that "Samvriti (藏文,梵文天城体,Samvṛti,梵文罗马拟音,concealing)" means to obscure, because it obscures the true meaning, it is conventional, it is deluded consciousness. It is truth on the object, so it is truth, that is, the nature of various phenomena such as form, like a dream. From "Parama Artha (藏文,梵文天城体,Parama Artha,梵文罗马拟音,ultimate meaning)," because it is the fruit pursued by those who strive for the most excellent meaning, it is the ultimate truth, which is the nature of non-deluded wisdom. It is also supreme, so it is excellent, because non-deluded wisdom is true in its object, so it is truth, that is, suchness. The determination of number refers to the knowable, that is, these things such as form, existence and non-existence, etc., are beyond all duality, and only through negation is it determined to have duality. Because the middle third skandha is eliminated, it is with duality. Moreover, transcending duality, the number is determined to be dual, which is determined by the valid cognition that holds duality. These two are established as the two truths, so the determination of number is established. The detailed classification is twofold: the ultimate truth and the conventional truth. As it is said in the Sutra of the Meeting of Father and Son: "The truths of the wise in the world are two; do not hear them from others, observe them yourself. They are conventional truth and ultimate truth; there is no third truth." Conventional truth can also be divided into two types: false conventional truth that appears but cannot function, and true conventional truth that appears and can function. As stated in the Treatise on the Two Truths: "Although appearances are similar, they are divided into true and untrue because of their ability or inability to function; this is the classification of conventional truth." That is, phenomena such as form that correspond to appearance and can function, arise from causes, are free from conceptualization, and appear in accordance with their respective kinds, possessing these four characteristics, are true conventional truths, because they can each function. False conventional truths that appear but cannot function, such as falling hair and the appearance of two moons, cannot function, so this is a detailed classification. For the ultimate truth, truly arising, etc., is merely negation.

The ultimate truth with distinctions is that which is not liberated from the elaborations of existence and non-existence. The ultimate truth without distinctions is that which is liberated from all elaborations such as existence and non-existence. As it is said therein: 'Also, the cessation of arising, etc., is considered to be in accordance with reality. The term "ultimate truth" is applied to the pacification of all elaborations of non-arising.' So it is said. Secondly, there are two aspects to the definition: the definition itself and the means of ascertainment. Firstly, the definition of mere truth is that any phenomenon is without inherent existence. The definition of conventional truth is that any subject cannot withstand rational analysis. The definition of ultimate truth is that any phenomenon can withstand rational analysis. That is, emptiness of its own essence is without inherent existence. That which can be refuted by ultimate reasoning is called 'cannot withstand analysis,' and that which cannot be refuted by any reasoning is called 'can withstand analysis.' Moreover, those who assert entities consider that which can perform a function to be ultimately true, and therefore do not accept valid conventions. However, the Madhyamikas assert two types of conventions: knowable things that cannot be analyzed and can perform a function are the characteristics of valid conventions, and knowable things that cannot be analyzed and cannot perform a function are the characteristics of false conventions. Furthermore, those who assert entities assert two types of ultimate truth: dependent ultimate truth and perfectly established ultimate truth. However, the Madhyamikas assert that because one aspect of elaboration is negated, similarity is taken as the reason, and the negation, the distinction of the unarisen conventional truth, is designated as ultimate truth, thus there is ultimate truth with distinctions. Since nothing is established anywhere in its essence, if it is said to be ultimate, then only the aspect that transcends all elaborations is divided into ultimate truth without distinctions. However, it is said that it is not possible to establish the characteristic of distinguishing ultimate truth for that which is separated from all elaborations. Among the five aggregates of knowable things, such as form, what is the basis to be represented by the two truths? The answer is: the basis representing ultimate truth is the unconditioned. That is, the two cessations and space are negations dependent on what is to be negated, and because they cannot be analyzed, they cannot be ultimate truth; only suchness is. The name of conventional truth
