It is divided into five bases: the base of form, the base of mind, the base of mental events, the distinction of these three—temporary dharmas, and the unconditioned. Regarding the views on these, there are two: with aspects and without aspects. Among these, with aspects means that the base of form, all that appears as form, is the mind and mental events themselves appearing as the image of form due to the habituation of imprints. It is not a different entity from consciousness. Thus, the appearance as the five objects such as form, and the two moons, etc., which are said to be fabricated, are also the appearance of the five sense consciousnesses together with the co-emergent mind and mental events. The horses and elephants in dreams, etc., are also the appearance of non-conceptual confusion together with the co-emergent mind and mental events. General meanings and general sounds are also the appearance of conceptual mind together with the co-emergent mind and mental events as a general image. In reality, consciousness is the nature of unmixed moments, but because it appears as a common image to many objects of attachment, it is merely called general. The appearance as sense faculties and the appearance as the container world, if one accepts the ālaya-vijñāna, then one accepts that the ālaya-vijñāna together with its retinue appears in that way. If one does not accept the ālaya-vijñāna, then one believes that the non-conceptual mind continuously exists, together with the co-emergent mind and mental events, appearing in that way. Secondly, there are three bases of mind: those who believe that many consciousnesses are real, those who believe that many consciousnesses are one real, and the school that says that the collection of consciousnesses is one. The first is, as the teacher Śākya-buddhi and others believe, the base of mind is that objects have many colors, and each color has many parts, and finally, there are many particles. Therefore, the eye consciousness itself, which is the same entity as it, is also many, and the consciousness that appears as each one is one. Similarly, each of the consciousnesses of sound, etc., also has countless distinctions, and there are countless consciousnesses on one cause. The second is those who say that the manifold is non-dual, believing that the appearance of objects and consciousness are not contradictory, and similarly, the appearance as many is also one real and not contradictory. Although it appears as many colors, it is the nature of one eye consciousness. Therefore, many eye consciousnesses do not arise for each person, and similarly, ear consciousness, etc.

Furthermore, dissimilar things do not arise in large quantities, so each is similar. Dissimilar things do not arise in large quantities, so it is held that there are five sense consciousnesses and the mind consciousness, making six. Even when the mind's conceptual thought ceases, it exists in a non-conceptual state, so the mind is permanent, and habitual tendencies rely on it. There are also those who hold that the storehouse consciousness (Ālayavijñāna), which proclaims the non-duality of all phenomena, is the eight consciousnesses. They believe that the six consciousnesses—the five sense consciousnesses and the mind consciousness—cease and are not present during fainting, intoxication, deep sleep, and states of meditative absorption. As stated in the Madhyāntavibhāga (Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes): "Except for mindless sleep and fainting, there are two kinds of meditative absorption, and perpetual non-perception." Therefore, since they have the nature of rising and falling and are unstable, the basis for habitual tendencies is the storehouse consciousness. Its essence is the unlabelled and the unspecified, and its characteristic is that it is the consciousness that serves as the basis for all seeds. It operates without completely ceasing its object, and it has five ever-present mental factors, such as contact, with unclear aspects and the associated feeling of equanimity. It flows continuously like a river until the vajra-like samādhi is manifested. After the vajra-like samādhi is manifested, it transforms into mirror-like wisdom. In that, the six consciousnesses and their retinues, with contaminated virtue and non-virtue, accumulate the ripening habitual tendencies that have the power to generate the body. From this, it accumulates the capacity to generate the body, the unspecified, and the homogenous habitual tendencies of uncontaminated virtue alone. Non-virtue and contaminated virtue also accumulate homogenous habitual tendencies. Therefore, it has the capacity to generate all homogenous causes, which is the seed aspect. From the cause of karma, at the beginning of the place of birth, the storehouse consciousness appears as the five faculties of the higher realms and the lower realms, and merely projects the connecting consciousness, which is the ripening aspect. Regarding this, it is said that the storehouse consciousness is the ripening, the place of all seeds, it is the taker, the holder, and the place, it is the discriminate and the non-discriminate, it is the unlabelled and the unspecified, it has the five ever-present mental factors such as contact, and its feeling is equanimity, it is the Arhat.
