The treatises that speak of achieving liberation through cow dung and the like are inverted treatises, and the treatises that focus on hearing poetry and the like, and the treatises that focus on debating reasoning and the like, and the evil deceptions such as gaining victory in war, and the sacrificial offerings of killing cows and the like, which are said to be Dharma, are of a harmful nature. Being free from the six evil treatises that are devoid of love, and possessing the great meaning of achieving temporary happiness and ultimate liberation, and the three treatises for accomplishing enlightenment and abandoning all the sufferings of samsara, are in accordance with the ways of the Buddhas. The ways of expressing these meanings are: the treatises that gather scattered things together, the treatises that reveal hidden things, the treatises that extensively explain various terms, the treatises that indicate difficult points, the treatises that clarify the order of words, the treatises that briefly indicate the meaning of words, the treatises that distinguish between upper and lower sections, and so on, through countless orders, divided into chapters, detailed explanations, collections, paragraphs, and prose, verses, mixed forms, and continuous orders. The teachings of different sections are clearly explained in small, medium, large, and vast forms, and the Buddha's words are most clearly revealed, divided into four types: direct meaning, definitive meaning, intended meaning, and hidden intended meaning, thereby making the teachings last long. As it is said in the commentary: "All dharmas are gathered into sutras and treatises, well-spoken words and their meaning's explanation, by the power of this, the teachings of Shakya, in this world realm, will last long." In terms of etymology: adding the suffix "sā" to "śa" of the word "śāstra" becomes "taming," and adding the suffix "ya" to "tra" becomes "protecting," thus possessing the qualities of taming and protecting. In the Commentary on Wisdom, it says: "Because it possesses both taming and protecting, therefore, it is a great treatise." The necessity is to clarify the meaning of the Buddha's words that are firm and difficult to understand, and to show the path of liberation, thereby guiding beings. In the commentary, it says: "The meaning of the Buddha's words is clear, possessing the meaning of entering liberation, the treatise is vast, and is respectfully accepted by the wise." Both the Buddha's words and the treatises

Regarding the distinctions of the ground, the Dharma that is taught, which arises from the circumstances of the Buddha and possesses the path to accomplish the two benefits, is the Word of the Buddha (bKa'). As stated in the Uttaratantra: "Whatever is meaningful and closely related to the Dharma, and is said to abandon afflictions in the three realms, and describes the qualities of peace, that is the speech of a true sage; otherwise, it is not." The Dharma that is taught, which does not rely on the circumstances of the Buddha, but is composed by an individual gathered from other lineages, as a commentary on the meaning of the Buddha's words and treatises, and which elucidates the path to liberation, is a treatise (bsTan bcos). As stated in the same text: "Whatever is spoken by a teacher who is solely controlled by the Victorious One, without distraction, and is in accordance with the path to liberation, that too is accepted with reverence, like the words of a true sage." As for the manner of teaching and listening, there are three aspects. The qualities of the teacher who teaches are as follows. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "A spiritual friend who is disciplined, peaceful, and extremely peaceful, who has made efforts in qualities, is especially rich in scriptures, who has realized reality, is skilled in speech, and possesses loving-kindness, should be relied upon, having abandoned weariness." And as stated in the Vajra Arrangement Tantra: "The teacher is full of treasure, complete like a river, possesses vows and commitments, and is full of loving-kindness. He is wise and diligent in benefiting others. The Vajra secret teacher should be relied upon in every way." The qualities of the student who listens are as follows. As stated in the scriptures: "Respectful to the guru, with completely pure morality, extremely diligent in meditation and recitation, strict, disciplined, and endowed with patience, well-spoken, abiding in diligence in vows, and possessing Dharma." And as stated in the previous text: "Fortunate, respectful, and generous, with stable intelligence, broad-minded, and diligent in practice, possessing supreme Dharma, compassion, and commitment, know that he is a Vajra disciple." The nature of common Dharma practice is to begin with generating the mind of enlightenment (bodhicitta). The main part is to retain the meaning of what is heard. The conclusion is to dedicate the merit to enlightenment. In this way, if it is a Sutra, one should listen in a state of regarding appearances as the eight examples of illusion. If it is Tantra, one should retain what is heard without distraction, in a state of clearly visualizing the deity and mandala in which one is teaching and listening. At that time, focusing one's mind single-pointedly on the words and meaning of the Dharma, abiding in a state of undistracted concentration, is quiescence (zhi gnas).
