Some believe that a complete scripture should fully explain the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, etc. Others consider a medium-sized treatise to be a scripture. For example, the Abhidharma composed by Shariputra, in which four thousand verses are regarded as a Dharma Skandha. As stated in the Treasury of Knowledge: Some say that a treatise is a scripture, while aggregates, etc., are also considered as such. These are established to counteract each affliction, based on the amount of content. However, this is not explained according to quantity, but rather determined by the completeness of the remedy for afflictions. Therefore, one should understand well the method of determining based on the completeness of the remedy. The definition of the Buddha's word is: spoken by the supreme guru. The purpose is for beings to achieve both temporary and ultimate benefits. As stated in "Extensive Wisdom": To accomplish the two benefits of beings, the Bhagavan speaks the Buddha's word, proclaiming the lion's roar in the assembly. Therefore, it causes white virtues to increase and completely pacifies all afflictive diseases. Now, regarding the classification of treatises that explain the intention (of the sutras), there are two aspects: the characteristics of the author (commentator) and the nature of the treatise composed. The first, the best, is one who has directly seen the truth of the nature of reality, such as Nagarjuna, Aryadeva, and Asanga. The intermediate is one who has seen the face of the tutelary deity, received permission from the deity, and is blessed by great compassion, such as Chandrapa and Shantideva. The last should be skilled in the five sciences and possess the oral instructions of the lineage of gurus, such as the teacher Palasbas, Yeshe Nyingpo, and Shakya Lodro. The five sciences are: grammar and logic, etc., which are external sciences; the three pitakas, etc., which are internal sciences; craftsmanship concerning deities and temples, etc.; medicine concerning the eight branches and Soma Raja, etc.; and astrology concerning the eight divinations. The eight divinations are: divination of men, divination of women, divination of mountains and trees, divination of oceans and water, divination of clothes, divination of jewels, divination of horses, and divination of elephants. The Treatise on Valid Cognition states that those who possess the oral instructions of the lineage, if they wish to explain the sutras, should give some oral instructions. This oral instruction is: containing the summarized meaning and.

Including debates and connections, expressing with words and meanings, just as it is said. Like this, although there are countless individuals who are skilled in different fields and have attained accomplishments, the well-known Six Ornaments and Eight Eminents are like the sun, moon, and jewels. The Six Ornaments are: Nagarjuna, Asanga, Vasubandhu, Dignāga, Dharmakīrti, and Guṇaprabha. The Eight Eminents are: on top of those, adding Āryadeva, Candragomin, and three heroes (uncertain which hero is referred to, possibly Fearless Courageous Wisdom), and subtracting Dignāga. There are five aspects to the nature of composed treatises, of which the definition is: composed by an author who is qualified, as an explanation of the Buddha's teachings, and possessing the qualities of both correcting and protecting. As it says in the *Exposition of Reasoning*: "That which corrects all the enemies of afflictions, and that which protects from the suffering of bad rebirths, because of the qualities of correcting and protecting, it is a treatise; these two are not found in other systems." The example is dependent on the subjective conditions of the author, the expressed content appearing as the speaker's expression, language, words, and letters, and the nature appearing in the wisdom of the listener. If classified, treatises are divided from the fundamental Three Baskets. It also has three forms, namely, mainly the training of discipline, as it says in the *Ornament of the Sutras*: "Falling and arising, and rising and definitely arising, and the individual and the established, and the detailed distinction and the complete determination, therefore it is the meaning of discipline." And mainly the training of mind, as it says in that same text: "Places and characteristics, and the explanation of the Dharma's meaning, therefore it is the meaning of sutra." And mainly the training of wisdom, as it says in that same text: "For the sake of direct perception, and repeatedly and subduing, and for the sake of realization, it is the meaning of Abhidharma." Starting from these methods, the treatises of Vinaya, Sutra, Abhidharma, and Secret Mantra were composed separately. These treatises are also free from the six treatises of non-Buddhists, and possess the three characteristics of Buddhists, that is, when classifying the grounds arising from hearing, it says: "Meaningless, meaning reversed, and possessing meaning, diligently taking up hearing, debate, and practice, abandoning bad deceit, lack of compassion, and suffering, it is considered that treatises are free from six and possess three." That is to say, the Vedas and so on are treatises without true meaning, and clinging to permanence and annihilation.
