From the perspective of categories, there are the Hearer Vehicle (Śrāvakayāna), the Solitary Realizer Vehicle (Pratyekabuddhayāna), and the Unexcelled Vehicle (Anuttarayāna). These three are mentioned in the 'Praise of Names': 'Through the three vehicles, one attains liberation; through one vehicle, one abides in the fruit.' From the perspective of the causal agent, there are three types of teachings: those spoken directly, those blessed, and those subsequently permitted. The first refers to those teachings directly spoken by the Bhagavan Vajradhara and others in places such as Akanishta. Specifically, the field where the Tantras of the Body are spoken is Ghanavyūha (Dense Array), and the teacher is Vairochana. The teacher of speech is Amitabha in Sukhavati. The abode of mind is Abhirati (Manifest Delight), and the teacher is Akshobhya. The place filled with the qualities of jewels, the teacher is Ratnasambhava. In the place where activities are perfectly accomplished, the teacher is Amoghasiddhi. The retinue consists of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and assemblies of Dakinis, immeasurable in number. These teachings given by the five teachers in the five Buddha-fields are all emanations of Samantabhadra, the essence of Vajradhara Heruka, appearing in this way due to temporary needs. Similarly, the places such as the bhaga of Vajrayogini also gather the nature of Akanishta and other realms, being the teacher and place of the Dharma of the Sambhogakaya. The Bhagavan Shakyamuni, in the midst of his retinue, spoke with sixty kinds of speech tones, appearing differently in different Nirmanakaya realms. Regarding the teachings of blessing, the teachings blessed by the body, such as placing the hand on the crown of Vajragarbha, giving him the courage to explain the 'Ten Bhumi Sutra,' as in the questions of Vimukticandra. The teachings blessed by speech, such as Manjushri being told to 'pacify the regret of Ajatashatru,' which led to the Sutra of Manjushri pacifying the regret of Ajatashatru. The teachings blessed by mind, such as the Bhagavan abiding in the Samadhi of Profound Appearance, blessing Shariputra and Avalokiteshvara, which led to the teaching of the 'Heart Sutra.' From the blessings of spontaneously accomplished qualities and activities, such as the appearance of the Tathagata's body from radiating light and teaching the Dharma, as described in the introduction to the Hundred Thousand Verses.

Just as the sound of Dharma arises from mountains, trees, birds, lotuses, and drums, etc. As it says in the commentary: "Through the blessings of this teacher, sounds from birds, twigs, pebbles, lotuses, wish-fulfilling trees, and drums, are also considered the Buddha's words because the Victorious One has blessed them." It also says in the Aralli: "Sounds from mountains, pebbles, twigs, lotuses, wish-fulfilling trees, and drums, are also considered the Buddha's words because the Victorious One has blessed them." Similarly, those Shravaka disciples who speak the Dharma through the power of blessings, as well as men, women, boys, and girls, etc., who speak the Dharma through the power of great activity, are also included as the Buddha's words. As it says in the Compendium: "Whatever Dharma the Victorious One's Shravaka disciples teach, explain, and are skilled in, and proclaim the supreme happiness and the attainment of its fruit, all of that is due to the power of the Tathagata's being. Why? Because whatever Dharma the Victorious One has taught, the best of people become disciples, learn beforehand, and teach as they have learned through direct experience. This is done through the power of the Buddha, not through the power of their own strength." Similarly, even if the Buddha's own words and the words of others are mixed in the Sutras and Tantras, one should understand the parts that are included as the Buddha's words through this method. The Buddha's words of subsequent permission, as it says in the Nirvana Sutra: "Ananda, after my complete Nirvana, when you are compiling the teachings, begin with 'Thus have I heard, at one time,' connect the words in the middle, and conclude with 'The Blessed One spoke, and they rejoiced greatly.'" Like that. If we differentiate from the perspective of antidotes and categories, there are eighty-four thousand aggregates of Dharma. As it says in the Lamp Illuminating: "The Great Sage spoke of eighty-four thousand aggregates of Dharma." That is, twenty-one thousand sections of the Vinaya Pitaka were taught as antidotes to desire; twenty-one thousand sections of the Sutra Pitaka and Abhidhamma Pitaka were taught as antidotes to anger, ignorance, and the equal measure of the three poisons; and twenty-one thousand sections of the three Pitakas of equal measure.

It is said that one hundred billion were spoken, revealing the inexhaustible treasure. For attachment, hatred, and ignorance, and for the equal application of the three poisons, twenty-one thousand antidotes were spoken, that is, so many aggregates of Dharma were spoken. As stated in the Guhyagarbha Tantra: To counteract the eighty-four thousand afflictions, eighty-four thousand teachings were taught. Thus it was said in the past, thus it is said now, and thus it will be said in the future. Among them, the three pitakas are the antidotes to the three poisons respectively, which is the causal vehicle; the equal application of the three pitakas is the vidyadhara of secret mantra, and to counteract all mixed and accumulated three poisons, the resultant Vajra Vehicle is taught. Therefore, the total is eighty-four thousand. As stated in the Guṇavyūha Tantra: The outer three pitakas are taught as antidotes to attachment, hatred, and ignorance respectively. The unsurpassed and equal secret mantra is taught as the antidote to all afflictions. All are eighty-four thousand. The Buddhas taught the aggregates of Dharma as antidotes to afflictions. The aggregates of Dharma are like limbs and branches gathered together and called a body or aggregate, which eradicates one affliction from its root, and shows the complete collection of categories with different bases, paths, and results as conditions for obtaining liberation. Just as when all medicines of the same category are gathered together to counteract one disease, it is called a collection of medicines. As stated in the Abhidharmakośa: For the antidote to various behaviors, the corresponding aggregates of Dharma are taught. As stated in the Traidhātukadarśana: To destroy afflictions, the number of aggregates of Dharma should be determined according to their number. Here, regarding the number of aggregates of Dharma, some, such as Kashmiri Ye shes rdo rje, consider it to be one thousand Ślokas. As stated in the Bhūmivarga: The eighty-four thousand aggregates of Dharma held by the Venerable Kundgawo are these three pitakas. If asked what the number of one aggregate of Dharma is, the answer is: one hundred multiplied by ten, that is, one thousand, is one aggregate of Dharma. Nāgabodhi and others consider that the name and words of any Dharma, written on a stalk of wheat or a tala leaf as thin as a divine garment, written with a tiny part of the tip of a hair without any padding, can be placed on the back of a strong elephant.
