In summary, the individual characteristics of words and meanings become apparent, and understanding their meaning is vipassanā (superior seeing). The Sutra of Adornment of Merit states: Mañjuśrī, for this, merely hearing without focusing, without concentrating the mind, is the samādhi of śamatha (calm abiding) that accords with sound. Separately distinguishing and clearly examining is vipassanā that thoroughly distinguishes meaning. Thus, śamatha and vipassanā follow one mind, and therefore are united. All the essential instructions for practicing the six pāramitās are stated in the Abhisamayālaṅkāra: Offering flowers, cushions, etc., restraining conduct in places, abandoning harm to all beings, supplicating the lama, holding the lama's instructions without distraction, asking fault-finding words to dispel thoughts, the lamp has six branches. The benefits of teaching and listening are: distinguishing Dharma from non-Dharma, eliminating the darkness of ignorance by knowing what to accept and reject, and walking on the path to liberation. The Teacher Ratna Gupta's commentary states: Listening is a lamp that dispels the darkness of ignorance; meeting virtuous people is a supreme birth; listening is the root that gathers virtuous Dharma; like a hand, it accomplishes all that is needed. Śāntideva in the Praise of Listening chapter states: Listening abandons what is meaningless; listening obtains nirvāṇa; listening causes one to turn away from sin; listening perfectly accomplishes the accumulation of qualities. Wisdom excels through the six pāramitās, and its cause is listening, therefore it is extremely excellent, as stated in the Uttaratantra: Because generosity accomplishes enjoyment, ethics lead to good rebirths, meditation eliminates afflictions, and wisdom eliminates afflictions and objects of knowledge, therefore, this is excellent, and its cause is listening. Wisdom is supreme, those four are, listening, therefore listening is supreme. Examining meaning with correct listening means never engaging in slandering the Dharma or individuals, because the obscurations are extremely heavy. As it says in that very text: Slandering the noble ones and despising the Dharma spoken by them, all that is affliction that has increased from the manifest attachment of ignorance. Therefore, do not connect the mind with those stained by the dirt of attachment.

Therefore, without the eye of wisdom that sees perfectly, believing the words of those who slander with bias and jealousy, without examining the nature, having wrong views, or slandering out of jealousy for mere gain, brings immeasurable obscurations. Therefore, those who are naturally wise and impartial should not commit such sins even for the sake of life and wealth in this life, for that leads to birth in Avīci hell. Even having committed the five heinous crimes, if one is liberated by contemplating the profound meaning, then abandoning the Dharma is not like that. As it is said in the Uttaratantra: Due to inferior intellect and lack of virtuous intention, due to relying on wrong pride, due to being obscured by the poverty of the true Dharma, in order to establish the correct meaning, due to craving for gain and being dominated by views, due to relying on those who denounce the Dharma, in order to prolong attachment to the Dharma and due to weak faith, even Arhats abandon the Dharma. Just as the profound Dharma declines, so too the wise should not be extremely afraid of fire, unbearable snake venom, executioners, and lightning. Fire, snakes, enemies, and vajra fire only take away life, but abandoning the Dharma does not lead to such terrible fear as going to Avīci hell. If someone repeatedly associates with bad friends, harbors ill will towards the Buddha, kills parents and Arhats, does what should not be done, and divides the Sangha, if he contemplates the nature of reality as it is, he will quickly be liberated from that. If someone's mind hates the Dharma, how can there be liberation for him? Therefore, since the inclinations of sentient beings are diverse, the individuals and Dharmas that appear are also diverse, and for the sake of benefiting beings, one should not falsely accuse any kind of Dharma, saying, 'This is wrong,' 'This is false,' 'This is bad.' Then, isn't it said that like gold that is burned, cut, and rubbed, examine my words carefully and then accept them, not out of respect? This refers to using wisdom to discern whether the order of words and meanings is correct when learning the Dharma that one wants to practice, not to having doubts about whether other schools of Dharma are correct or not. In short, that which causes one to abandon samsara and
