For the sake of benefit, it manifests and acts. The meaning of this is: it should be understood as being as pure as the realm of practice in the Avatamsaka Sutra. When a Bodhisattva enters a room, they generate the thought that all sentient beings may attain the city of liberation. When sleeping, may I attain the body of a Buddha; when dreaming, may I realize all dharmas as dreams; when waking up, may I awaken from ignorance; when rising, may I attain the form body of a Buddha; when dressing, may I wear the clothes of shame and propriety; when fastening a belt, may the roots of virtue be closely connected; when sitting on a cushion, may I attain the vajra seat. Like this, one generates thoughts and practices as taught. The movement of breath in and out is a preliminary method for accomplishing samadhi, subduing conceptual thoughts. By focusing the mind on the passage where the breath goes in and out of the mouth and nose, conceptual thoughts are subdued. The Bodhicitta, the conventional truth, is the four immeasurables such as loving-kindness, and the ultimate truth is meditating without memory, thought, or distraction in the state of emptiness. As it says in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "When conceptual thoughts are pacified, one should meditate on Bodhicitta." Secondly, regarding the three ways of meditating specifically. In the small accumulation path, there are the four mindfulnesses. The first of the meditations, the mindfulness of the body, is meditated upon as being like the sky in equipoise, and in the post-meditation period, it is meditated upon as being impure and like an illusion, and so on. For the mindfulness of feelings, in equipoise, it is meditated upon as unborn, and in the post-meditation period, whatever is felt is suffering and without essence, like a plantain tree. For the mindfulness of mind, in equipoise, it is meditated upon as being empty by nature, and in the post-meditation period, it is meditated upon as being unceasing and not abiding. For the mindfulness of dharmas, in equipoise, it is meditated upon as being equality itself, and in the post-meditation period, it is meditated upon as the eight examples of illusion, and so on. By meditating on the four mindfulnesses in the small accumulation path, one enters the four truths of the path of seeing. Thus, first, by knowing the body as suffering, one enters the knowledge of suffering. Second, by knowing feelings as suffering, one enters the abandonment of the origin. By meditating on the mind as impermanent, one enters the manifestation of the cessation of clinging to permanence. By meditating on dharmas as selfless, one can reverse clinging to self.

From there, one enters the path of meditation. As stated in the *Madhyāntavibhāga*: "To eliminate bad states and craving, to establish a foundation and avoid confusion, one should engage in the four truths; therefore, cultivate mindfulness." In the intermediate stage of the accumulation path, one prevents unwholesome dharmas that have not yet arisen from arising, and one severs the continuity of those that have arisen. For wholesome dharmas, one generates those that have not yet arisen, and one increases those that have arisen. One exerts effort and cultivates antidotes such as selflessness and illusion or dreams. As it says in the same text: "Having fully understood all aspects of opposing factors and antidotes, diligence arises in four ways to abandon unwholesomeness." In the great accumulation path, one also cultivates the four legs of miraculous abilities. By cultivating single-pointed concentration, *śamatha* and *vipaśyanā* combined, one accomplishes the desired meanings of the eye, clairvoyance, and miraculous abilities. As stated in the *Madhyāntavibhāga*: "Dwelling there, the very nature of being serviceable, all meanings will be accomplished." Here, miraculous abilities and so on are accomplished by the power of the mind of *samādhi* being serviceable, hence they are called the legs of miraculous abilities. These are the four *samādhis* of aspiration, effort, mind, and investigation. Thus, first, when the mind is gathered on a single object of focus and remains steadily, if conceptual thoughts arise, one immediately does not become scattered by them, but gathers the mind on the object of focus. One cultivates in this way again and again. As stated in the *Sūtrālaṃkāra*: "Having fixed the mind on the object, do not let its continuity be distracted. Having quickly realized distraction, one should again fix it there." Secondly, in the path of joining, there are two aspects: the basis and the nature. There are two bases: the basis of the body is any of the five types of beings. The basis of the mind is any of the six desire realms. The nature has three aspects: cause, result, and essence. The first is the Mahāyāna accumulation path. As stated in the *Madhyāntavibhāga*: "Generating what accords with the part of liberation." The result is the three paths of seeing, cultivation, and no-more-learning. The essence has four aspects: definition, basis, division, and distinguishing characteristics. The definition is the Mahāyāna accumulation path being complete, and the Mahāyāna virtuous qualities that arise before the path of seeing. The basis is called the Mahāyāna path of joining.
