Whatever pure land one desires, if one generates the unsurpassed Bodhicitta, one will attain it. The mind of enlightenment is like a wish-fulfilling jewel, fulfilling all desires, and so on. It exhausts all sins. As it says in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: "What other virtue can overcome the powerful and unbearable sins, other than the perfect Bodhicitta?" To increase great merit, it says in the Secret Inconceivable Sutra: "Whatever merit there is in the mind of enlightenment, if it had a form, it would fill the entire realm of space, and it would be even greater than that." It also says: "Whoever contemplates the mind of enlightenment for even a moment, the accumulation of merit from that, even the Buddhas cannot fully describe." Ultimately, one can quickly attain the fruit of Buddhahood. As it says in the Gaṇḍavyūha Sūtra: "If you want to quickly attain unsurpassed enlightenment, you should generate the unsurpassed mind of enlightenment." As it says in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: "Like the supreme elixir of a goldsmith, having taken this impure body, it transforms it into the priceless body of a Buddha, therefore, one should firmly hold onto what is called the mind of enlightenment." Also, if one does not generate the mind, one cannot become a Buddha, but if one generates the mind, one can become a Buddha. As it says in the Bodhicitta Explanation: "If the mind of enlightenment is not generated, one will never attain enlightenment, and in samsara, there is no other way to accomplish the benefit of oneself and others." Second, there are three ways to generate the mind after understanding: The preliminary practice is to arrange offerings in front of the Buddha image, and the disciple offers prostrations and a mandala. The teacher tames the mind with the benefits of generating the mind of enlightenment, and so on. Like the Mind-Only school, one asks about obstacles and promises to keep the precepts, and then bestows the generation of the mind. But here, according to the Madhyamaka school, one performs the seven-branch practice, either in detail or in brief, such as prostrating, making offerings, confessing sins, rejoicing in virtue, turning the wheel of Dharma, requesting not to pass into nirvana, and dedicating the merit to sentient beings. The main practice is: Inviting all the Buddhas and Bhagavas residing in the ten directions, and

Please listen, all great holders, and great Bodhisattvas who dwell on the great earth. Just as the Sugatas of the past generated the mind of Bodhi, and abided in the training of Bodhisattvas, in that order, likewise, for the benefit of beings, we will also generate the mind of Bodhi, and likewise, we will also train in the training in that order. Thus, recite three times. Afterwards, make them happy by proclaiming the benefits, as the Bodhicharyavatara says: Today my life has borne fruit, I have well obtained this human freedom, today I am born into the Buddha family, now I have become a son of the Buddha. From now on, I will strive to act in accordance with the deeds of this family, I will act in such a way as not to defile this stainless and noble lineage. After reciting these and other verses, also explain the method of guarding. Third, the nature of the training to be guarded has two aspects: the detailed classification of the training, and the manner in which it is guarded. The first has two aspects: the Mind-Only school considers there to be four root downfalls, as stated in the Twenty Verses: The four root downfalls should be understood as being like defeats: being attached to gain and respect, praising oneself and disparaging others, being miserly and not giving Dharma and wealth to suffering beings who are without protection, not listening to others' confessions, angrily beating others, abandoning the Great Vehicle, and showing what appears to be the true Dharma. Thus it is. The Madhyamaka school considers there to be nineteen or twenty, as in the Compendium of Trainings: There are five determinations for a king, five determinations for a minister, eight determinations for commoners, and two or one common ones. The first is stealing the property of the Three Jewels, punishing monks who have vows, causing renunciates to leave the training, committing the five inexpiable sins, and holding wrong views. The second five are destroying villages, countries, cities, towns, and regions. The third eight are teaching emptiness to those who have not trained their minds, causing those who have entered the Great Vehicle to turn back, abandoning the Pratimoksha vows and associating with the Great Vehicle, holding the Hearer and Solitary Realizer vehicles and causing others to hold them, praising oneself and disparaging others for the sake of offerings, and oneself.
