The middling are the four right abandonments, the great are the four legs of miraculous power, the five faculties in the heat and peak of the joining path, the five powers in forbearance and the supreme dharma, the seven branches of enlightenment in the seeing path, and the eight noble path branches in the path of meditation. One meditates. The first is the beginning of all paths, the small accumulation path. The first practitioner who enters it meditates on the mindfulness of the body as an antidote to attachment to one's own and others' bodies. That is, as an antidote to general desire, one reverses attachment by meditating on one's own and others' bodies and all appearances as skeletons. As it says in the Treasury: "A skeleton is for all those with attachment." As an antidote to specific desires, one meditates on the eight perceptions of becoming swollen, becoming red, being eaten by worms, and so on. When one is free from attachment, one sometimes practices mindfulness of the body by looking at the body, meditating like a water tree, and so on. Then one meditates on the mindfulness of feelings, and for the three feelings of pleasure, pain, and neutrality, one meditates on the perception of suffering and the perception of being without essence like a water tree. As it says in the Sutra: "Whatever feeling there may be, one should recognize all of it as suffering." Then one meditates on the mindfulness of the mind, that is, in the form of calm abiding and special insight. One holds the mind on the breath going in and out, pacifying thoughts, and the continuum of the mind is the conventional truth. If one examines it, it is the ultimate truth, an indivisible moment. In that state, one meditates on the meaning of selflessness. Then one meditates on the mindfulness of dharmas, that is, on the dharmas included in formations and consciousness. One meditates on the selflessness, impermanence, illusion-like nature, and so on of all internal and external entities. That is, one meditates on form, feeling, and perception as being without essence in the three: body, feeling, and mind. By meditating on the two, formations and consciousness, with the mindfulness of dharmas, the afflictions of clinging to the dharmas included in the five aggregates are reversed in various ways. The gross objects to be abandoned are suppressed, and one enters the higher path. As it says in the Treasury: "By thoroughly examining the body, feeling, mind, and dharmas in two characteristics."

In order to subdue, both the common and individual characteristics, one should meditate on the nature of the body as impure, feelings as painful, the mind as impermanent, and phenomena as selfless, each individually. Then, when the middling stage of the accumulation path arises, one should strive and meditate in order to prevent unwholesome qualities that have not arisen from arising, to abandon those that have arisen, to generate wholesome qualities that have not arisen, and to increase those that have arisen. Therefore, in order to completely abandon all unwholesome aspects, it is called right abandonment. Then, when the great stage of the accumulation path arises, one should meditate on the four concentrations of aspiration, effort, mind, and investigation. That is, in order, one should cultivate meditation by generating one-pointed aspiration towards the virtuous object of either conventional or ultimate truth, and continuously sustain it with great effort, focusing the mind one-pointedly, and meditating by thoroughly distinguishing the meaning with investigation. From this, various meditative minds arise accordingly, and in order to accomplish the means or limbs of miraculous powers, it is called the feet of miraculous powers. Then, the path of preparation arises in the continuum. Therein, in the two stages of heat and peak, one cultivates the five faculties. These are the five faculties of faith, effort, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom. That is, one meditates with a faithful attitude towards the sixteen aspects of the four truths. One generates joy through effort, does not forget the distinctions of the objects through mindfulness, holds the mind one-pointedly on the object through concentration, and meditates by distinguishing the objects through wisdom. As it is said in the Treasury of Knowledge: "This is the field of activity of the four truths, the sixteen aspects arise from the heat, the peak is also the same as this." What are the sixteen? Impermanence, suffering, emptiness, selflessness - these are the four aspects of the truth of suffering; cause, origin, arising, condition - these are the four of the truth of origin; selflessness, peace, excellence, separation - these are the four of the truth of cessation; path, reason, accomplishment, definite emergence - these are the four aspects of the truth of the path. Then come forbearance and supreme mundane qualities.
