Similarly, just as we do not accept that the effect exists in the cause, this difference is also not established. Thus, the arising from self is refuted. Furthermore, Buddhists assert that smoke arises from fire, not from smoke itself, thereby accepting arising from other. They also accept the agent that causes the arising from other. From darkness, flame does not arise. From these two views, if something arises from other, then flame should also produce darkness. If flame does not produce darkness, then it would be unreasonable for other smoke to arise from other fire, since both are other and are the same. Therefore, the consequentialist argument that gathers contradictions is: From the Entering Path: "If another arises dependent on another, then thick darkness would also arise from flame." When saying this, if it is realized that the pervasion is not established, just as darkness does not arise from flame other than darkness, it is also not permissible for smoke to arise from fire other than smoke. Just as smoke arises from fire other than smoke, darkness should also arise from flame other than darkness, so that they are equal and the pervasion is established. To make it easier to understand, one can say: Flame, the subject, should produce darkness, because darkness other than you, and because you other than darkness, are other. If it is said that because the flame arising from other than smoke has the ability to produce smoke, it produces smoke; but because the flame arising from other than darkness does not have the ability to produce darkness, it does not arise, then that difference is the same as what is to be proven, just as we do not accept arising from other. The difference that fire has the ability to produce smoke, but flame does not have the ability to produce darkness, is itself not established. Therefore, arising from other is refuted. Similarly, because both faults exist, arising from both is refuted. Furthermore, the Lokayatas assert that things arise without a cause and assert that the scent and color of a sky lotus do not arise, because it is not apprehended. For this view, the refutation is similar. Just as it says in that very text: "If beings were to become empty of cause, then like the scent and color of a sky lotus, since it is not apprehended, the very bright world would be apprehended by people, therefore, one's own mind should say as before that the world is from cause." If it is accepted that it arises from no cause, then because the world is without cause, the various bright colors are manifestly apprehended.

If it is realized that the consequence that gathers contradictions is the consequence of "becoming so," and that the pervasion is not established, even though the world is without cause, it should be as clear as it appears. Just as the fragrance of a sky utpala (Sanskrit Devanagari: उत्पल, Sanskrit Romanization: utpala, Chinese literal meaning: blue lotus) is also without cause, it must also appear manifestly. In this way, the pervasion is established by equating the head. To that, if it is thought that even if they are similar in being without cause, the world appears because it has essence, but the fragrance of a sky utpala (Sanskrit Devanagari: उत्पल, Sanskrit Romanization: utpala, Chinese literal meaning: blue lotus) does not appear because it has no essence, if one wants to make a distinction, then that distinction is the same as what is to be established. Just as we have not established arising from no cause, the distinction that the world has essence and the fragrance of a sky utpala (Sanskrit Devanagari: उत्पल, Sanskrit Romanization: utpala, Chinese literal meaning: blue lotus) has no essence is also not established. Thus, arising from nothing is prevented. By preventing all the tenets established by consequence, one does not accept the tenets that are elaborated from oneself. As it is said in the Refutation of Disputes: "If I have some vows, then I have these faults. Because I have no vows, I am only without fault." And as it is said in the Four Hundred: "For those who have no attachment to existence, non-existence, or existence and non-existence, even after a long time, it is not possible to speak of criticism." And as it is said in the Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning: "If there is acceptance of things, then from the arising of desire and hatred, endless and unbearable views will arise. From that, disputes will arise. That is the cause of all evil views. Without that, afflictions do not arise. Therefore, if that is fully known, views and afflictions will be completely abandoned." And as Nāgārjuna says in the Jewel Garland of the Middle Way: "If there is acceptance of things, then fears such as annihilation will arise. For those who do not accept things, where will fears such as annihilation arise? If there is a thing, then the world will become finite and infinite, and so on. If there is a thing, then one must accept it. How can one accept that things are unborn? The thing that is accepted does not exist even as an atom, because it has never been born, like the son of a barren woman. For example, to a barren woman, if one asks, 'Who is your son?' Because she has no son, she cannot speak." Thus it is said. Well then, how should the classifications of the two truths and so on be made? They are established by worldly people.
