Also, the examination of what exists between prior and subsequent moments by a valid cognition that ascertains it directly, as a truly existent, partless moment, is as follows: By inferring from the sign of existing between prior and subsequent moments, which possesses the three aspects, it abides as separate from a truly existent, partless unity. Since unity is negated, it is established that many truly existent, partless entities accumulated from it are also negated. Thus, the property of being separate from a truly existent one and many is established. The third valid cognition that ascertains pervasion is as follows: On top of a vase and so forth, having disregarded the distinctions of the vase and so forth, merely by negating that the existing entity is a multiple entity, it is determined when it exists as a single entity. When it is directly ascertained that the mere existing entity is pervaded by existing as one or existing as many, this existing entity itself, which is seen as the object pervaded by one and many, even if it is a truly existent entity, destroys the ability to give rise to doubt that it is not pervaded by its one and many. Thus, it is implicitly established in the manner of defining the characteristic that the truly existent entity is pervaded by one and many. As the Lord of Reasoning said, "Whatever has the ability to perform a function, that here is truly existent." Thus it is said. Thus, by explaining the subject, the object to be negated, and the reason, the proposition established as a valid reason is not the negation that illusion and so forth are objects of complete investigation, but merely the negation of a true entity, which is a non-affirming negation and establishment. When contemplating this, it also cuts off elaboration in a way that the basis, the subject, does not appear, and it is not the case that the subject appears in the opposite of going to reason, because the subject is not established by reason, and because it is impossible for what appears to the valid cognition of reason to be uncertain. Not being certain by reason is also because the knowledge of reason does not cut off the imputation of the subject. If the valid cognition that ascertains the subject does not cut off the imputation of the subject, then it follows that the subject is not established. If it cuts off, then the knowledge of reason cannot cut off the imputation of the subject. Thus, the Svatantrika Madhyamikas assert that the nature of the knowledge of reason is the nature of inference, unborn, free from elaboration, able to withstand analysis, and the characteristic of ultimate truth. However, this method is still not thorough, because it establishes that it does not exist ultimately but exists conventionally.

By the sign of "is," it cannot transcend the entities of permanence and annihilation. Conceptual consciousness determined by the mind cannot become the true meaning. Merely refuting elaboration cannot transcend the distinctions of elaboration, and so forth, being refuted by many reasonings. In the commentary on the "Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning," it says, "If it is admitted to exist conventionally, then it will become permanent; if it is asserted to be non-existent ultimately, then it will become annihilation," and so forth. Furthermore, if the two truths are considered different, then in one entity, just as it does not exist ultimately, it will also not exist conventionally; just as it exists in various ways conventionally, it will also become impermanent ultimately, and so forth; if it is established as an entity or essence, then it will become established simultaneously, and so forth, with many contradictions remaining. Second, the Prasangika Madhyamaka school has three views: the distinction between deluded and non-deluded consciousness; the manner of distinguishing the two truths in dependence on that; and the manner in which the Prasangika cuts off elaboration through debate. The first point is that Master Nagarjuna considered that the most excellent of his disciples who held the view of definitive meaning, Chandrakirti and others, thought in this way: In the equipoise of those who have attained the bhumis and in the Buddha-bhumi, since the appearance of knowable objects and knowing subjects, such as objects and subjects, as apprehended and apprehenders, is not established, therefore the activity of the knowing subject's wisdom is also pacified. At that time, all activities of mind and mental factors cease, and in the inexpressible and inconceivable wisdom, the correct, non-deluded mind that realizes the nature of reality is given such a name. As it says in the *Entering the Middle Way*, "Because the nature of phenomena is unborn and unceasing, therefore, relying on them, that is like a rational view. Because the mind arises in the aspect of an object, that is its object. Likewise, relying on convention, reasoning is also like that." And, "When the dry firewood of knowable objects is completely burned and pacified, that is the Victor's Dharmakaya. At that time, there is no birth and no cessation. The cessation of mind is the direct realization of that body." And, as it says in the *Clear Words*, "Here, the elaboration of mind and mental factors also ceases," and so forth. That state is called the realization of ultimate truth, and its object is the intrinsic reality, the dharmadhatu, the nature.
