That is so. Furthermore, the Vaibhashika school asserts that, in terms of ultimate truth, there are two types: the other-dependent ultimate truth and the thoroughly established ultimate truth. However, the Madhyamaka school argues that, by refuting one-sided elaborations, and using similarity as a reason, the refutation (of objects) is called a distinction of the unarisen conventional truth, and is established as the nominal ultimate truth. Moreover, since nothing is established in its own nature, in terms of ultimate truth, only the aspect that transcends all elaborations can be distinguished as the non-nominal ultimate truth. However, it is asserted that there cannot be a characteristic that distinguishes ultimate truth for that which is free from all elaborations. If someone asks, from the basis of the five objects of knowledge, such as form, what is the basis to be represented by the two truths? (The answer is) the basis representing the ultimate truth is the unconditioned. This is because the two cessations and space are negations dependent on what is to be negated, and therefore cannot be analyzed, so they cannot be the ultimate truth, only suchness is. It should be understood that the basis of the nature of conventional truth is all objects of knowledge that have not realized the unborn nature of suchness. Some Madhyamikas who adhere to the conventional truth speak in accordance with the Vaibhashika school. They believe that the objects that are simultaneously apprehended and the apprehending subject are the causes that gather together, arising from the previous collection. Even for non-conceptual consciousness, everything that appears as the apprehended aspect is true as mere illusions in the external world. Some others acknowledge the Sautrantika-Madhyamaka view, asserting that although the external object itself does not actually appear in consciousness, the object imparts its own image to consciousness, so consciousness arises in an image similar to the object, thereby cognizing the object, and through this way of cognition, fully experiencing the object, and this apprehending and apprehended subject existing at different times exists in the conventional. Still others believe that the Yogachara-Madhyamaka school holds that in the conventional, everything that appears in consciousness is the object of consciousness, and not an external object, their view is in accordance with the aspect-possessing school. Some others believe that, just as the apprehended aspect that appears in dreams, and the appearance of hair-nets, the appearance of two moons, and universals, etc., that appear upon awakening, are neither objects nor objects of consciousness, so too, for worldly people, the mountains that are called real objects...

I, houses, men, women, bottles, cloths, and so on, are all empty of both external objects and objects of consciousness. From beginningless time, due to the habits of ignorance, they merely appear as non-existent. Objects that exist in conventional truth are merely happiness, etc., that clearly manifest attachment, and are solely mind and mental events. Although explained in various ways, like the Vaibhashikas of the Shravaka school, some differences exist, such as the assertion that gross objects are characterized by the aggregation of atoms, and the denial of self-awareness in mind and mental events. However, in essence, they share similarities, such as not wanting appearances to be consciousness and arising from their own prior causes. Even though they do not accept self-awareness as the Mind-Only school does, they do accept a mere gnosis that does not differentiate between existence and non-existence, as stated in the commentary: "By the gnosis of one's own awareness." There are two kinds of valid cognition for determining: The valid cognition for determining conventional truth is that, for phenomena that arise dependently, such as forms, the knowledge of reasoning that follows lines of reasoning such as being separate from one and many, and by inference, what can be analyzed is determined to be an object of knowledge that cannot be analyzed by the force of negating the real object, and that is the determination of characteristics. The valid cognition for determining ultimate truth is that, having obtained the valid cognizer who determines the object to be measured by the reasoning of ultimate analysis that can be analyzed, even if it is realized by the non-conceptual gnosis of one's own awareness, those ordinary beings determine it by the inferential valid cognition of reasoning that follows lines of reasoning. That is, by abandoning the distinctions of the subject's objects, and taking the general category of objects as the basis, it is determined by manifest or inferential valid cognition that enters into one aspect of appearance. Thus, when the real object is negated for the mere category of objects, and emptiness, free from elaboration, is determined to be the object of the ultimate analysis of reasoning, then all the distinctions of categories, such as the distinctions of objects like form and happiness, are cut off from imputation, because they realize that those are the pervasive places of emptiness, without abandoning the mere object that is realized. That subject...
