Among you two, there are five distinctions: the basis of distinction, the meaning of distinction, the defining word, the complete distinction, and the definite number. The first is merely the knowable. The second is generally just the opposition of characteristics without any otherness, such as different names, otherness of essence, otherness of opposition in one essence, and the four kinds of otherness that merely negate oneness. Here, the first is, as stated in the "Explication of the Thought Sutra": When conventional direct perception is measured, since there is no otherness in opposition to it, the ultimate truth is also measured, so sentient beings in samsara attain nirvana from the beginning. Since there is no otherness in opposition to the ultimate truth that does not possess otherness, conventional forms and so on also become empty of otherness. Since there is no otherness in opposition to the conventional truth that increases afflictions when taken as an object, afflictions increase when the ultimate truth is taken as an object. Since there is no conventional truth that can be initially realized by measurement and there is no otherness in opposition to it, the ultimate truth also becomes impossible to determine from now on, which is refuted by four faults. To believe that there is otherness in opposition to one essence is to accept illusion as the ultimate truth, because the Prajnaparamita Sutra says: Whatever dharma is perfectly enlightened, there is neither truth nor falsehood in it. The wisdom of meditative equipoise knows all dharmas as being like the center of the sky, and the wisdom attained after meditation knows all dharmas as being like illusions, which contradicts this scriptural authority. It is also not an appearance empty of truth, because the meaning of negation is established as the ultimate truth. If one establishes a non-affirming negation that is separate from one and many, then the rabbit's horn is not certain. If one establishes only a non-affirming negation, then the conventional truth is not certain. If one establishes a specific non-affirming negation as a reason, saying that the appearance that is not separate from one and many exists before awareness, then since the existence of the distinction before awareness contradicts the separation of one and many in essence, it is not established. Because there is no reason, and it will be no different from the true conventional, and the discernment of the object to be negated will be the same, and it will become a fault such as having a view inferior to that of the Mind-Only school.
