If it were not for "I," then consciousness would be unimpeded, and therefore, the fault of seeing things that are obstructed by veils, etc., would occur. As it says in that very text: "The eye sees forms with a basis, it is not the consciousness that relies on that. Why? Because there is an interval, because it does not see forms." Thus it is. The basis of mental factors is: contact, attention, feeling, perception, intention, desire, interest, memory, concentration, wisdom, faith, shame, embarrassment, non-attachment, non-hatred, non-ignorance, diligence, pliancy, conscientiousness, equanimity, non-harming, attachment, anger, pride, ignorance, view of the aggregates, doubt, wrath, resentment, concealment, vexation, deceit, cunning, jealousy, stinginess, arrogance, harming, shamelessness, lack of embarrassment, lethargy, excitement, lack of faith, laziness, carelessness, forgetfulness, distraction, non-alertness, regret, sleep, investigation, analysis, these fifty-one mental factors. These also, their respective lord is consciousness, because they engage with one object, their object is the same; because they sever with different qualities, their aspect is the same; because they arise simultaneously, their time is the same; because they rely on one master sense, their basis is the same; just as one person does not generate more than one eye consciousness at one time, similarly, its retinue, such as contact, does not arise more than one, therefore their substance is the same. They are the same by five similarities. By looking at the meaning of the sense, just as the meaning of consciousness is understood, so too do they understand the difference in meaning. Since the aspect of meaning does not appear to both mind and mental factors, Seizer and seized meet and necessarily arise simultaneously. Both mind and mental factors are said to have no self-awareness other than awareness of external objects. Non-associated compositional factors are: attainment, cessation meditation, non-perception meditation, non-perception, life faculty, birth, aging, abiding.
