Just as a mirror reflects its own image, the consciousness of an object also reflects an image similar to itself in the second moment, which arises because the object of the previous moment projects an image onto the present moment. Because the projector projects in secret, the present moment appears with an image similar to itself. The future is also when the present projector projects an image outward, and consciousness appears in the form of the object, experiencing similarity, and is therefore called "understanding the object." As it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika, "Experiencing similarity is called the consciousness that experiences the object." And, "For the aspect of consciousness with an image, although these two are actually different, because it is similar to an image, it is possible to perceive only an imputation." This is the so-called view of having an image. Object-consciousness (dön rigpa) is named object-consciousness because it focuses on the object. All consciousnesses experience self-awareness and clarity in that very moment, therefore, experiencing oneself is its essential characteristic. Because one clearly experiences oneself, "appearing as similar is its aim." Therefore, the "aim, experience, and self" of all consciousnesses exist differently. This is how it is explained. Phenomena such as the appearance of two moons, although the image of two moons appears in consciousness, because there are no two moons projecting the image externally, it is called illusion. The Sutra School (Sautrāntika) would not say that it is an illusion because the object is false. For mental consciousness and its related mental activities, mental direct perception (yid kyi mngön sum) refers to the second moment of the object of sense consciousness projecting an image, and thus grasping the object because it is similar to it. The appearance of horses and cows in dreams, and the unclear appearance of general concepts in conceptual thought, where past and future, object and nature are mixed, although appearance is the essence of consciousness, it is an illusion because there is no object projecting the image externally. All consciousnesses that are clearly experienced, that is, self-cognition, are not illusions. Non-associated compositional factors are also like a fist when the palms are clenched, they are the state of form, mind, and mental factors. Therefore, they do not change from these three into other entities. Attainment (thob pa) is the state of the mind acquiring predispositions. The three samādhis (snyoms 'jug gsum po) are the state in which mind and mental factors cease in the body. The life faculty (srog gi dbang po) is the state in which form, mind, and mental factors exist equally.

Similarity is also the state where those three are alike. Birth is also the state of obtaining those three without having them before. Aging is also the state of those three changing. Existence is also the state of those three continuing to exist. Impermanence is also the state of those three continually ceasing. Ordinary beings are also the state of not having obtained the Dharma that transcends those three. Entering and so on are also the state of the cause and effect of those three. The collection of names and so on, the three, are the state of the terminology of sound. The three unconditioned things, like the son of a barren woman, are completely non-existent, so it is said that they are without substance. The six unreasonableness based on those aspects are: external objects, the ultimate truth, are unreasonable; the nature of coarse appearance consciousness is unreasonable; the meaning of creating an image is not established; the mind is completely non-existent during absorption is unreasonable; the general meaning is not a cognizable object is unreasonable; and the characteristic of sound itself cannot be a expressive. The first point is already refuted by refuting the Vaibhashikas. The second point is, if the coarse appearance is the nature of consciousness, then how can you deny that the entities of suffering and happiness are not different? Since happiness and suffering are experienced as different, if non-difference is refuted, then since the coarse appearance and consciousness are experienced as different, why is the sameness of the nature of consciousness not refuted? Since consciousness is established as one, it is not an internal holder, and since happiness and suffering gather in one mind, because one prevents the other, it will only become contradictory. The third point is, even if the visual consciousness has three conditions, if the meaning of creating an image is inferred from the sign of occasional appearance, then why not establish meat-eating from the sign of occasional appearance? The fourth point is, if the mind arises later from a body without mind during absorption, then since the previous reasoning has refuted it, it will become an admission of arising from no cause. The fifth point is, if the general meaning is the object of cognition, then there will be no momentary mixing. The sixth point is the characteristic of sound itself, because the general meaning is not apparent and is not an object of attachment. If it is not like that, then by blocking the ears and hearing the characteristic of sound itself, the wisdom that understands the expressed content will directly arise. Merely because it is the cause of understanding the expressed content, it is considered to be the expressive.
