Always wandering in samsara. Thus it is said. That is to say, the twenty-four transformations of the chief one appear as illusions in the relative truth. By clinging to the self and considering it to be true, one wanders in samsara. The nature of the self, being free from action and activity, is constant, pervasive, and unwavering, which is the truth of the ultimate truth. Those who know this and do not waver from that state desire liberation. The benefit of understanding these meanings is the accomplishment of liberation. Just by knowing these twenty-five, whether with matted hair or a topknot on the head, one can abide in any style, and one will attain liberation by abiding in any place one likes, without any doubt. Thus it is said. The second is the Ishvara school. The great god Ishvara spoke many tantras, from which there are two disciples: the Foot-Eyed and the Grain-Eater. Once, a sage entrusted Uma to guard, and he developed attachment. Fearing that he would lose his asceticism, he looked at Uma's foot and practiced his asceticism, thus achieving accomplishment. Those who rely on the treatise called "The View of Reason," composed by the Foot-Eyed one, are called Rationalists. By eating only the chaff of rice and practicing asceticism, those who rely on the treatise called "Discriminating the Particulars," composed by the Grain-Eater, are called Particularists. These schools believe that all the happiness and suffering of beings, samsara and liberation, are caused by Ishvara's displeasure or pleasure. The practitioner does not understand these reasons: "My happiness and suffering are not under my own control. If Ishvara casts me away, I will either fall into a precipice or ascend to the heavens." Thus it is said. That is to say, whatever is offered during a sacrifice is obtained in this life, and in the next life, those will become my retinue and be reborn in the heavens. Brahmins become Brahmins according to their desires, Kshatriyas become Kshatriyas according to their desires, and wealth becomes wealth according to their desires. One should properly perform excellent sacrifices. Thus it is said. They say that liberation is attained by burning one's own body as an offering to please the gods. Those who uphold the tenets of these schools are called Ishvaras, Owl-Children, and Six-Meaningists. These schools believe that all philosophical tenets are gathered by analyzing them into six meanings with reason, and therefore they rely on the aspect of reason. The six meanings are: substance, गुण (Tibetan, Devanagari, guṇa, quality), कर्म (Tibetan, Devanagari, karma, action), सामान्य (Tibetan, Devanagari, sāmānya, generality), विशेष (Tibetan, Devanagari, viśeṣa, particularity), समवाय (Tibetan, Devanagari, samavāya, inherence). Thus it is said. Among these, substance is...

Therefore, I, time, direction, consciousness, and space are the five permanent substances, and earth, water, fire, and wind are the four impermanent substances. The qualities that depend on substances are twenty-five. Among them, the thirteen that depend on my substance are: happiness, suffering, neutrality, dharma, non-dharma, conditioned phenomena, the force of effort, and the six consciousnesses. The seven that depend on time and direction are: number and volume (two), conjunction and action (two), otherness and non-otherness (two), and individuality. Qualities are of five types: sound is the quality of space, smell is the quality of earth, taste is the quality of water, tactile sensation is the quality of wind, and color is the quality of fire. Actions are five: lifting and placing (two), stretching and contracting (two), and moving. Generality is of two types: pervasive and limited. Particularity is the characteristic of not intermingling with each other. Combination is what connects substances and qualities. Therefore, I am permanent, one, all-pervasive, belonging to the continuum of sentient beings, and the enjoyer. Therefore, it is considered to be a substance with five characteristics. Other schools also consider me to be the self, possessing qualities such as desire and hatred, being the support and all-pervading, being the enjoyer, and consider the self to be the nature of substance. Thus it is said. Even though I am a substance, because the consciousnesses of the five senses are considered qualities, I am able to apprehend objects. Although the nature is permanent, because effort and combination are regarded as qualities, taking a body and so on are considered my qualities. Even though I myself am permanent, I become an agent. Just as a pot breaks and sand scatters, from this world to another, in transferring and connecting the continuum, what is called 'I' takes it. Thus it is said. The third is the Pervader school. The god Vishnu composed a treatise of one hundred thousand verses, and from the lotus in the navel arose the four-faced Brahma. Therefore, all containers and essences are emanated by Brahma, so he is called the father of the world. From his four faces, he spoke the four great kinds of knowledge: poetry, governance, sacrifice, and determinism. These are permanently existent from beginningless time. Brahma remembers and speaks them, so knowledge is considered permanent. Later, they were collected by the sages and became the content of their respective doctrines. Among them, relying on the treatise of the Pervader school, namely the grammarians who rely on the light of grammatical speech, and relying on the weapon of speech of the sage Agni...
