That which is constant, unique, the cause of producing all transformations, uncreated by anyone, hidden even from the sage Kapila, possessing five special characteristics. The primary element of the result of transformation is the nature of the three guṇas (Tibetan: ཡོན་ཏན།, Sanskrit: गुण, Romanized Sanskrit: guṇa, literal meaning: quality), and because it is not balanced, it manifests as many impermanent states, which is matter. If divided, there are twenty-three. The first of these is the great, buddhi (Tibetan: བློ།, Sanskrit: बुद्धि, Romanized Sanskrit: buddhi, literal meaning: intellect), the inner agent, called clear wisdom and the essence of awareness, like a double-sided mirror. It holds the five external objects such as form, and internally possesses the aspect or form of knowing pleasure, pain, and equanimity. The second is ahaṃkāra (Tibetan: ང་རྒྱལ།, Sanskrit: अहंकार, Romanized Sanskrit: ahaṃkāra, literal meaning: ego) possessing a share of self (Tibetan: བདག་སྐལ་པ།, Sanskrit: हिस्सेदारी, Romanized Sanskrit: hissedārī, literal meaning: share), from which arises the conceit of considering oneself as one, which if divided, includes ahaṃkāra transformed from atoms, ahaṃkāra transformed from the elements, and ahaṃkāra transformed from transformations, but all are counted as one ahaṃkāra. From the first ahaṃkāra arise eleven senses: the five senses of intellect—ear, nose, tongue, body, and eye; the five senses of action—mouth, hand, foot, genitals, and anus; and the mind, which is both, making eleven in total. From the second ahaṃkāra arise the five tanmātras (Tibetan: སྒྲ། དྲི། རོ། རེག ཁ་དོག, Sanskrit: शब्द, गंध, रस, स्पर्श, रूप, Romanized Sanskrit: śabda, gaṃdha, rasa, sparśa, rūpa, literal meaning: sound, smell, taste, touch, form), namely sound, smell, taste, touch, and color. From these, the five elements arise in order: space, earth, water, wind, and fire. Sound is the quality of space, and so on. The third ahaṃkāra is a companion or helper to the first two, and does not produce separate results. These meanings are stated in the treatise of Black Ishvara: "From nature comes the great, from that comes ahaṃkāra. From that, the groups of sixteen. The sixteen also arise from those. From the senses, the five great elements." Thus, of the twenty-four, their nature is ultimate truth, and the twenty-three transformations are considered conventional truth. "The best of the three guṇas is not transformed into the path of seeing. Whatever is transformed into the path of seeing is easily accumulated like an illusion." Thus, these are the twenty-four principal material elements. Self and the twenty-five tattvas (Tibetan: ཤེས་བྱ།, Sanskrit: तत्त्व, Romanized Sanskrit: tattva, literal meaning: reality) are included in the two truths and are the objects to be known. There are two ways to understand these: to understand the manner in which cause and effect arise, and to

This is about how an individual understands to enjoy the Pradhana (chief, primary). Firstly, Prakriti (nature) is only the cause, and Mahat (great), Ahamkara (ego), and the five Tanmatras (subtle elements) are the seven causes. The eleven senses and five elements are considered the sixteen effects. The individual (Purusha) is considered neither cause nor effect. Pradhana is the agent but not the action. The seven, beginning with Mahat, are both action and agent. The sixteen are only action. The individual is neither action nor agent. Thus it is said. Because the manner of arising is only from itself, cause and effect are considered the same entity. The manner of creation is also only making manifest what was previously existent, and it is not considered creating something newly non-existent. The manner of destruction is also only a temporary pacification or manifestation for a kalpa (eon), and impermanence of permanent destruction of nature is not considered. The way the individual enjoys the Pradhana is: unclear happiness, etc., exists in the nature of the Pradhana, and the clear ones are three Thus it is said. The fault of not understanding such meaning is: clinging to the nature of Pradhana and the temporary changing appearances as the form of the self, and clinging to it as changing, thereby becoming inverted and wandering in samsara. Because nature enters, therefore the qualities, being obscured by darkness, due to the inverted mind, the unwise think, 'I did it.' And there is no power to disturb the root. Thus it is said. This individual, in the ultimate sense, is the nature of pure awareness. Because of not understanding that nature, it is ignorance.
