It is said to be like making a pile, as stated in the Treasury of Knowledge (Abhidharmakośa): Some say that treatises have a measure. Piles and the like are also just a way of speaking. They believe that these are the measures established to counteract each affliction individually, based on the amount, not the measure explained according to the number. Therefore, it is best to understand that it is established by the power of complete counteraction. The definition of the Buddha's word (bka') is: spoken by the supreme master. The purpose is for beings to accomplish both temporary and ultimate benefits. As stated in the Extensive Wisdom (Ye shes rgyas pa): To accomplish the two benefits of beings, the Blessed One's word, proclaims the lion's roar in the assembly, thus increasing the white (virtuous) and completely pacifying all afflictive diseases. Now, regarding the classification of treatises that explain the intention (of the Buddha), there are two aspects: the characteristics of the author-teacher and the nature of the treatise composed. The first is the best, which is seeing the truth of the nature of reality, such as Nāgārjuna, Āryadeva, and Asaṅga. The intermediate is seeing the face of the yidam deity, receiving permission, and being blessed by great compassion, such as Candrapa and Śāntideva. The last is also being skilled in the five sciences and having the oral instructions of the lineage of lamas, such as the teacher Śrī Gupta (Dpal sbas), Jñānagarbha (Ye shes snying po), and Śākya Lodrö (Śākya blo gros). The five sciences are: grammar and logic, etc., which are external sciences; the three baskets (Tripiṭaka), etc., which are internal sciences; craftsmanship of deities and temples, etc.; medicine of the eight branches and Soma Raja, etc.; and mundane science of the eight divinations, etc. The eight divinations are: divination of men, divination of women, divination of mountains and trees, divination of oceans and water, divination of clothes, divination of jewels, divination of horses, and divination of elephants. Having the oral instructions of the lineage is as stated in the Explanation of Valid Cognition (Pramāṇavārttika): Those who wish to explain the sutras should be given a few oral instructions. The oral instruction is: one should explain including the meaning that summarizes the purpose, including debate and answers, including connections, and including the meaning of the words. It is like that which is said. Thus, although there are countless numbers of those who are skilled in different fields and have attained accomplishments, the six ornaments and eight supreme ones are widely known.

Like the sun, moon, and jewels. The Six Ornaments are: Nagarjuna's Essence, Asanga, Vasubandhu, Dignāga, Dharmakīrti, and Guṇaprabha. The Eight Supreme Ones are: In addition to the above, adding Āryadeva, Candragomin, and the three heroes, subtracting Dignāga. Regarding the nature of composed treatises, there are five points. The definition is: the author is qualified, the composition is an explanation of the Buddha's words, and it possesses the two qualities of taming and protecting. As stated in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: 'That which tames all the enemies of afflictions, and that which protects from the suffering of bad rebirths, for the sake of the qualities of taming and protecting, it is called a treatise, these two are not found in other systems.' The example is: depending on the author's primary cause, the content expressed that appears as the speaker's words, phrases, and letters, and the nature that appears in the listener's mind. The classification is: treatises divided from the root Three Baskets. That also has three aspects. Primarily focusing on the training of discipline, as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: 'Defeats and arising and restoration, and definite arising and individuals, and establishment and distinction, and for the sake of various determinations, it is the meaning of the Vinaya.' And primarily focusing on the training of mind, as stated in the same text: 'Places and characteristics, and for the sake of speaking of Dharma meanings, it is the Sutra.' And primarily focusing on the training of wisdom, as stated in the same text: 'For the sake of direct perception and repeatedly, and for the sake of overcoming realization, it is the Abhidharma.' Starting from these reasons, the treatises of the Vinaya, Sutra, Abhidharma, and Secret Mantra were composed separately. Those are also free from the six treatises of the outsiders, and possess the three reasons of the insiders, that is, distinguishing and determining the ground arising from hearing. Meaningless, meaning reversed, and possessing meaning, taking hearing, debate, and practice as essential, and abandoning wickedness, deceit, lack of compassion, and suffering, the six treatises are considered separate from the three. Thus it is said. That is, the Vedas and other treatises that lack true meaning, and the treatises with reversed meanings that claim liberation is achieved through views of permanence and annihilation, and the treatises that emphasize hearing, such as poetry, and the treatises that emphasize debate, such as logic, and gaining victory in war, and so on.
