You should contemplate all the unparalleled aspects, and without any distraction for even a moment, think only of death. As it says in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: "Day and night, at all times, I should only think of this." That is to say, until you turn your mind away from this life, you must put aside meditation and other virtuous practices, and think of this from the bottom of your heart, because there is no Dharma more profound than this for turning the mind away from samsara. The great teacher Padmasambhava also said, "Urge yourself on with the impermanence of death, without distraction. Meditate on it constantly, dividing the day and night into sessions." Just as he said. Therefore, in the long term, even if you contemplate the formation and destruction of existence and peace, life is impermanent; in the short term, even if you contemplate a moment, life is impermanent. The senses and objects are impermanent, because circumstances change; retinue and wealth are impermanent, because they exist now, but now they do not; parents and relatives are impermanent, because they are gone after death; villagers and neighbors are impermanent, because there is much separation; weather and old age are impermanent, because appearances change; happiness and suffering, enemies and friends are impermanent, because they are like an inn. In short, all sentient beings rest their heads on birth and death, wear the clothes of happiness and suffering, spread the mat of grasping and being grasped, make the bed of ignorance, sleep the sleep of self-grasping, and dream the dreams of habitual tendencies. In the house of the three realms of samsara, the five poisons operate in their own characteristics, and all these beings are in a sleep and dream that has no beginning or end, and no time of awakening. Thinking of these, now you must strive to liberate yourself from the dark room of samsara. Those who are controlled by karma and afflictions, even when impermanence manifests, cling to it as real; even when drowning in the river of birth and death, they do not know how to liberate themselves; even when experiencing various sufferings, there is no time of fear; there is no true spiritual friend, no guiding light, no protector; the eyes of Dharma are closed, and they wander in the darkness of ignorance. Thinking of these, for the rare leisure, you should generate a joyful mind, and it is appropriate to practice the Dharma. Meeting the true guiding light, the most excellent guide, meeting the qualified lamas, at this time of obtaining the nectar of the profound Dharma, you should practice diligently, and strive to cross to the other shore of the ocean of the three existences. Life is impermanent like the shadow of the setting sun, like a tree on a cliff being blown by the wind, like clouds and lightning, like dew on the tip of a blade of grass.

Na, may we contemplate dying quickly. If we do not remember from the heart that we will die now, laziness and distraction will not help at the time of death. Therefore, just as if it has fallen upon us now, with fear and trembling, practice the essential meaning. From now on, may I also dwell in a forest with flowers, in a place empty of people and with the sound of flowing water, in a secluded and pleasant place near a rocky mountain, thinking that there is no essence in the four seasons. May I obtain the most excellent nectar among all that is adorned with virtue and created by worldly people, and proclaim the great sound of impermanence and emptiness. In that beautiful place with medicinal trees, flowers, and fragrant aromas, in a place with peaceful Dharma and cloud curtains, may I accomplish the essential meaning of clear light in one lifetime through the golden lightning of the Knowledge Holder Victors. From the liberation mansion, the precious palace, may the sound of peaceful Dharma drums resound, awakening all beings from the sleep of ignorance, and may they manifestly awaken in the primordial ground. With a mind clear due to weariness, arising from the desire to go alone to the peaceful forest, uttering words of aspiration from the heart, may it be quickly accomplished through pure faith and virtue. These are the intermediate verses. Second, examining the signs of death. From the *Transformation Sutra*: There are twenty-one signs of death. Go to a solitary cemetery, make offerings to the lama, and give alms. Furthermore, please other beings with food and drink, and then examine the internal, external, and secret signs of death. Thus it is said. Therefore, for ordinary people who do not know when they will die, observation is done through divination and so forth, which is superior to worldly people such as outsiders. The way yogis determine the time is: go to an empty, uninhabited place, or a monastery, or a cemetery, or a forest, or a mountainous region, and do things such as examining the life-form. In the *Union of Sun and Moon Sutra*, it says: When the Lord of Death, Mara, arises, examine the bardo of dying in this way. In a solitary place or an empty place, cherish seizing the time of death. Thus it is said. The actual examination is divided into two: uncommon and common. The first is the uncommon. In *That Sutra* it says: In the realm of space, when the image becomes impermanent and disappears, the disappearance of the moon image is death, and the severance of the four limbs is within four months. That
