If a king were to pass away, Wealth, friends, and relatives would not follow. Wherever beings go from, Karma follows like a shadow. Second, contemplating the reasons for certain death, thereby constantly generating renunciation and weariness: Like this, even if one obtains the difficult-to-find leisure, it is certain to perish because it is an aggregate of the four elements, therefore it is conditioned. Like a heap of bubbles, it is uncertain when this will perish. Now, while this unperished support remains, I should practice the supreme Dharma of liberation. One should contemplate from the depths of one's heart, what is the use of this life's appearance, which is like a dream and an illusion? As it is said in the "Jewel Heap Sutra": For the gross appearances of the elements, There is no place to stay, how wonderful! For the stable life of beings, There is no fixed time, how wonderful! For the appearance of the six aggregates' objects, There is no permanence, how wonderful! For the arising of beings' thoughts and feelings, There is no exhaustion, how wonderful! For the suffering arising from the body, There is no purification, how wonderful! Thus, although it is impermanent, beings who cling to the appearances of this life, clinging to permanence and truth, are deluded. I should not become like that, I should contemplate this from the depths of my heart. Have I benefited others? Have I conquered enemies? Have I occupied lands? Whatever I have done, all of that is meaningless and false, so I should look inward at my own mind. As the venerable Atisha said: Alas! Looking outward at worldly deeds, All actions are the cause of meaningless suffering. No matter what one contemplates, there is no benefit, One should become accustomed to looking at one's own mind. One should think like that. Third, contemplating the metaphors of certain death, thereby being advised to meditate on the profound meaning of emptiness when needed: In general, the metaphors of the impermanence of conditioned phenomena are the same as dreams, illusions, and so on. As it is said in the "Collection of Specially Expressed Verses": Alas! All conditioned things are impermanent, They are of the nature of arising and ceasing. Having arisen, they cease, Their cessation is the greatest bliss. Like a star, an illusion, a lamp, An illusion, a dewdrop, a bubble. Like a dream, lightning, and a cloud, Conditioned phenomena are also like that. In particular, the metaphor of the impermanence of beings' lives is like the union of the sun and moon.

In the Tantra of Great Secret, it says: All sentient beings with bodies, life is impermanent like a dream, and dreams cannot establish anything. Life is impermanent like a rushing stream, and the stream does not stay in one place. Life is like the ungraspable wind, and the wind cannot hold onto beings. Life is short like an illusion, and illusions do not last forever. Life is unreal like magic, and magic cannot occupy a real place. Life is like a transient guest, and guests do not stay permanently. Life is like uncertain rain clouds, and clouds cannot grasp time. Thus, the measure of beings' lives is uncertain in this way, suddenly like the falling of hail, and such time cannot be grasped. So it is said. In the Sutra of Extensive Play, it says: Life is impermanent like playful clouds, swiftly passing like water flowing down a steep cliff. So it is said. In the Collection of Special Utterances, it says: Some die while still in the womb, and likewise, some die immediately after birth. Some die just as they learn to crawl, and likewise, some die while running. Some are old, some are young, and some die in their prime. Therefore, saying that this person is young, what confidence is there in being alive? So it is said. Therefore, thinking about impermanence, that one will surely die quickly, regarding the activities of this life, attachment, hatred, fighting, laziness, accumulation, greed for profit, factionalism, subduing and protecting enemies and friends, empty talk that is heard but not applied to practice, and all spiritual friends, one should think from the heart, what is the use of these? As the saying goes: Life is short, and the aspects of knowledge are many, and the length of life is unknown, like a swan taking milk from water, one should accept what one desires. So it is said. Therefore, from today onwards, one must strive to practice the profound Dharma. Moreover, even by observing the appearance of external phenomena, because the four seasons change, it is not constant. Because day and night change in an instant, it is not momentary. Thinking about the sequence of birth and death, the nature is not constant. Thinking about the guests in a shop, thinking about those who gather and will eventually separate, one will die quickly, one will surely die, and when one will die is uncertain, thinking that non-Dharma is useless, and also thinking about the age of one's own illusory body, the thoughts of the mind, the sequence of happiness and suffering, and the changes that occur before and after, are also impermanent, unstable, changing, and transient, and after death, one will return again.
