The ground appearance (Tibetan: གཞི་སྣང་) appears as body and wisdom, and the self-luminous display of self-nature, which is the activity of the two form bodies, is the pure Dharmata Bardo. The delusory appearances of the six realms are the impure delusory Bardo. So, between what two things do these two dharmas, pure and impure, exist? Since one must go out from the realm of original purity and then dissolve back into original purity, it exists between the nature of original purity. The first also arose from there, and now it also exists within the inner and outer aspects of its manifestation, and ultimately it must also be delivered into that state. There is no Bardo in the realm of original purity, because it does not depend on other previous or subsequent dharmas, and it is impossible to enter between any two, because it transcends the extremes of change and appearance-emptiness. As it says in the Transcendence: 'The original purity of the very beginning cannot be said to be the basis of delusion, and likewise, what is non-delusion?' This key point is a great bond if one has wisdom. Second, the definition is: 'Bardo' (Tibetan: བར་) is said to be the Dharma in the middle of any above, below, before, or after, for example, the dream Bardo exists between falling asleep and waking up. 'Ma' (Tibetan: མ་) means representing the middle. 'Do' (Tibetan: དོ་) means being in the middle like a link connecting the beginning and the end, like the connecting strap in the middle of a yoke.

Here, the bardo of intrinsic nature, the bardo of dying, the bardo of dharmata, and the bardo of existence are considered as four. As stated in the Transcendent Treatise: "The dharmata of the bardo is like this, explaining the extremely secret dharmata, if divided, there are four types." Fourth, the manner of appearance is divided into two. First, generally speaking, the appearance to the entirety of the three realms is: the belief that the grasping and the grasped, attachment, hatred, ignorance, and other afflictions manifest, as well as subtle forms and formlessness. The appearance to each of the six realms is: to the same water, gods see it as nectar, and so on. As stated in the Treatise on the Two Truths: "Objects are the same, but minds are different, therefore, one sees the meaning as unaccomplished." For individuals, to one Devadatta, many enemies and friends appear, as well as pleasure and pain, delusion and non-delusion, attachment and hatred, good and bad, possessing dharma and not possessing dharma, and so on, in various ways of appearing. The good and bad deeds of the latter lead to different consequences. In short, whatever appears to whomever, it is like the various good and bad dreams of last night, appearing but not established, therefore, it is using clarity in non-existence. Second, the specific explanation is divided into four. The appearance of the bardo of abiding in intrinsic nature is: because of being bound by the five aggregates such as form, the appearance of the five kayas naturally ceases; because of being bound by the elements and sources, the appearance of light and color naturally ceases; because of being bound by karma and afflictions, the appearance of wisdom and dharmata naturally ceases. Because of the mind's attachment to external appearing objects, one revolves day and night in the difficult-to-cross river of the four perversions, thus engaging in various karmas and habitual tendencies. The four perversions are: because of not understanding the intrinsic nature of samsara's illusory appearances, like dreams and illusions, one clings to permanence in impermanence, clings to truth in untruth, clings to happiness in the causes and results of suffering, and clings to substantiality and characteristics in intrinsic emptiness. To counteract these, the Bhagavan, in order to guide childish beings, taught the four seals of dharma. The appearance of the bardo of dying is: the elements of the body become disordered, thus experiencing the suffering of the external body; the path of feeling of the mind disappears, thus experiencing the suffering of the internal mind; the ocean of habitual tendencies collapses, thus clinging to the appearances of this life, yet experiencing the suffering of separation.
