It does not exceed the sequence of twenty faculties. That also does not exceed the three: superior, intermediate, and inferior. Among them, the superior faculty is three instants, the intermediate is five, and the inferior is liberated in seven to twenty-one instants. The lowest of these cannot be liberated from being born in the realm of the self-existing manifestation. The one who has reached the end of the superior is liberated in three instants into primordial purity. As it is said in "Burning the Body": Like a shooting star, in the sky, in the manner of running, three instants, even together with the manifestation, self-dissolves into its own essence. Thus it is said. The remaining six of the superior are perfected by the three instants of completing the action. The difference in faculties is that instants have long and short durations. Some take from one to six days of meditation. Perfection does not depend on days, but on the three instants of liberation. That arises from the power of realization. The instant of liberation is when wisdom arises in appearance, and one remains there, considering the duration of realizing the object as one instant, and is liberated in three instants. The intermediate and inferior instants are longer than that. Now, I will explain how to calculate with the instant of completing the action. Third, the way to dispel confusion about the differences. There are two: confusion and dispelling it. Confusion about parts is because the tantras and instructions are extremely numerous, and some say three instants, five instants, some say three days, twenty-one days, etc. Without distinguishing between the time of meditation and the instant of liberation, they explain by taking the two as one. There are two ways to dispel that. The reasoning is: If the two were one, then the peak of the superior faculty, the dharmata, should be liberated in one instant, because it is liberated in one day of meditation. If you accept that, then the statement that the superior is liberated in three instants is clear. Similarly, the lower limit of the superior should be liberated in six instants, because it is liberated in six days. If you accept that, then it is clear that any superior is liberated in three instants. That is also certain to be three instants even when liberated into primordial purity at the time of transference in the bardo. Because in the first instant there is recognition, in the second instant realization arises, and in the third instant there is liberation. The scriptural authority is: In the Lamp of Wisdom, it says: Therefore, the instant is distinguished by realization, the day of meditation is the part of abiding. From the difference of possessing and not possessing qualities, mixing and similarity, and not mixing possession. This is clear.

Here, regarding the divisions of instants (skad cig ma) in our own system, they are pervaded by the realization that recognizes one's own nature. However, the 'lodging' (zhag) of meditation is not pervaded by realization, because even without realization, there are those who abide in the meditation of their own nature, like the last of the spontaneously accomplished ones. Likewise, the instant is not pervaded by meditation, just as liberation occurs in the primordial purity (Ka dag) in the instant of realization. There is a boundary related to meditation, like from the peak to the end. The 'lodging' of meditation is not pervaded by the realization of an instant, like the delusion of the very last. There is a boundary related to the instant, like the intermediate and above the intermediate of the last. Therefore, it is crucial to distinguish between the instant and the 'lodging' of meditation. Regarding the 'lodging' of meditation, some consider it to be the current 'lodging,' which is highly unreasonable, as it contradicts scripture and reason and cannot be refuted. As stated in the Pramāṇaviniścaya: 'Because the paths of error are endless, they should not be elaborated upon here.' It is said. One can refute similar delusions of wrong views, but those that are extremely unreasonable are all nets of elaboration and have already been made a place of shame for the wise, so what is the use of saying more here? By proclaiming victory, fools will also become victors, and this delusion should be turned away by everyone. Here, the 'lodging' of meditation is considered to be the duration of the state of samadhi at present. Therefore, in the bardo, the duration of the state of samadhi is also referred to as the 'lodging' of meditation. Third, extensively explaining the manner of liberation of the faculties, there are three: the superior, the intermediate, and the inferior faculties in order. The first has seven categories. Among them, those who have reached the ultimate of the superior are liberated in three instants without being related to the 'lodging' of meditation. Others are liberated in three instants in relation to more or less of the 'lodging' of meditation, like a shooting star streaking across the sky, entering into the self-appearing primordial purity (Ka dag). During that time, the self-light of the emanation radiates, emptying the cycle of beings in the spontaneously accomplished realm of self-appearance, and they are liberated. However, from the self-ground of primordial purity (Ka dag), emanations are no longer projected, because that is a state beyond the gross appearances of body and wisdom. Emanations that are projected upwards or downwards, doing the benefit of actual beings, are projected from the arising of the basis appearance of spontaneous accomplishment from primordial purity (Ka dag). Emanating from the path requires holding the body of the great transference.
