There are also those who attain stability in a particular way. Those who have not understood themselves and do not have the instructions of the lama will be afraid, terrified, shrink back, fear, and lose consciousness, etc., at that appearance. This is also a factor in approaching samsara. There is also confusion in the distinctions of the twenty-one faculties. Thus, the three faculties are: the superior will be liberated in three instants. The middling will also attain stability in five days. Stability is attained in twenty-one instants. The inferior ones will exhale in the realm of the Nirmāṇakāya of the Svabhāva and attain Buddhahood without a bardo. There are three aspects to this: how to be confused in the twenty-one faculties, how to be liberated, and how to dispel confusion about the distinctions. The first is that those who have not seen the door of the secret great definitive instructions of the lama, and those who have seen it but are under the power of laziness and distraction, the lowest of the faculties, because they have not gained power over the self-appearance of the dharmatā bardo, are very afraid, and because they have not found certainty, are very terrified, wondering what caused that. Because they have not really met, they feel shrunk back, wondering what this is. Because they have not experienced even a single instant before, they wonder what this appearance is, whether the faculties are confused, etc., and their consciousness is completely lost. Not knowing the true nature of self-appearance, they also take the path of existence bardo, which is the near-taking of samsara, and are confused in the twenty-one faculties. How are they confused? When seeing the great appearance, all the lowest of the faculties are confused because they grasp at the appearance of external objects. The middling of the lowest are confused by the experience of attachment to it. The superior of the lowest are confused because self-grasping immediately becomes an obstacle. The excellent of the lowest are confused because they focus on the self-characteristic. The supreme of the lowest are confused because they are deluded into ignorance, not knowing anything. The peak of the lowest are confused because they enter into doubt, thinking about what it is. The perfect of the lowest are confused because they grasp that very thing as a part of the object. The lowest of the middling are confused from the point of view of seeing that clarity has no substance. The middling of the middling are confused because they grasp the essence of attachment to the clinging to things. The superior of the middling are distracted by objects and

Because one does not know anything, just like a child seeing a vision, one is confused from ignorance! The best of the middling is confused because he makes knowledge the cause of clinging! The supreme of the middling is confused because he contemplates on the object of perception! The pinnacle of the middling is confused because he is caught in joy and sorrow, thinking, "Such a vision has arisen for me!" The perfection of the middling is confused because he places it in certainty, not knowing it as his own appearance! The lowest of the best is confused because he clings to beauty! The middling of the best is confused because he clings to attachment to beauty! The best of the best is confused because, although he does not cling to anything, there is no recognition as if he were distracted! The best of the best is confused because the object of the vision has become a clinging to the single nature of the cause! The supreme of the best is confused because he does not understand the part of momentary change! The pinnacle of the best is confused because he clings to signs and characteristics as distinct! The perfection of the best is confused because he does not know anything, but is dominated by the neutrality or ignorance of the vision! All twenty-one ways of being confused are gathered here. Therefore, it is very important not to be confused in the bardo! Among them, it is now important to recognize the ordinary external appearances and the part of clear light as one's own appearance, nakedly and individually in an instant! Furthermore, in Self-Arisen it says: "Hey, close attendants, listen! Sentient beings are confused in the bardo in this way: Some are confused from appearance, some are confused from experience, some are confused from what is immediately after, some are confused from the object of focus, some are confused from the thought 'What is this?', some are confused from the thinker, some are confused from the object, some are confused from the absence of object, some are confused from the essence, some are confused from ignorance, some are confused from conditions, some are confused from contemplation, some are confused from 'I', some are confused from not knowing, some are confused from clinging, some are confused from non-clinging, some are confused from concept, some are confused from cause, some are confused from the moment, some are confused from signs, some are confused from neutrality." Because there are twenty-one minds of sentient beings in the bardo, one way of being confused will fully manifest the vision, so each way of being confused will manifest a vision. This is the extensive explanation of the ways of being confused in the bardo. Second, the way of liberation.
