Now, the instruction on settling the mind itself in non-action (བྱ་བྲལ་). The key to the spontaneous arising of dharmata (ཆོས་ཉིད་) is the instruction on how conceptual thoughts arise as wisdom (ཡེ་ཤེས་). The key to dharmata being liberated from its own ground is the instruction on how appearances are free from acceptance and rejection. First, the nature (གཤིས་) is free from action; if you act, you will not realize it; if you remain without acting, you will realize it. Therefore, the three doors are placed in their natural state. As it is said in the *Transcendence* (ཐལ་འགྱུར་): "Furthermore, the dharmata of non-action is liberated by non-action." And as it is said in the *Great Garuda Soaring in the Sky* (ཁྱུང་ཆེན་མཁའ་ལྡིང་): "Therefore, samsara and nirvana are free from action; what else is there to do other than Dzogchen itself?" And as it is said in the *Six Objects* (དམིགས་དྲུག་): "The ground is established by non-action." Second, appearances are recognized as the play of mind. The play is recognized as the groundless, clear appearance. If the clear appearance is grasped, it is recognized as delusion. If it is not grasped, it is recognized as self-luminous, non-existent appearance. Therefore, it is determined that external objects are not different from mind, and the place of rebirth in samsara is emptied. Again, the mind that grasps appearances is recognized as groundless. The groundless is recognized as the self-motion of emptiness. The self-motion is recognized as the traceless, primordial purity. Therefore, the mind that wanders is purified from the groundless, and the three realms dissolve into the nameless dharmata. As it is said in the *Perfection of Skill* (རྩལ་རྫོགས་): "Consciousness is not in the object, the dharmata is in a state of peace. Appearances are self-arising in oneself, self-appearance is without substance. Appearances are free from mind, the meaning of dharmata itself. Do not contract or expand, look at your own object." Here, some people recognize appearances as mind, and recognize mind as emptiness. On top of this recognition, they embellish it, saying: "Emaho, appearances are recognized as mind, therefore the mind is subdued. Mind itself is recognized as emptiness, therefore emptiness increases bliss. Emptiness is recognized as awareness, awareness itself is inseparable from the expanse; that alone is the dharmakaya." It seems that they are attached to the self-character of these words. There are three reasons for this: viewpoint, purpose, and the measure of what harms reality. Therefore, it is not close to the view of the Heart Essence. The viewpoint is that these words are spoken to correct those who grasp external objects as truly existent. As it is said in the *Self-Arisen* (རང་ཤར་): "For some, appearances are shown as mind." This is because appearances are not other than mind; they are merely appearances of delusion. The purpose is simply to abandon attachment to external objects. The harm to reality

Now, if appearance is mind, then the mind must have color and shape, etc., and be determined by the senses such as the eyes, because appearance is determined as form, etc., shape and color. If appearance is mind, mind is emptiness, and emptiness is awareness, then these three will be confused with each other. Awareness will become confused, appearance will become invisible to the eyes, etc., and the mind will become unconfused, because these three are of the same essence. This difference has been explained in detail before. Taking appearance as the yoga of mind will not liberate. As it says in Rangshar: "Appearance is the yoga of mind. Everything arises from my mind. If the mind itself is realized, what is there to do? Those who always say this, I have not said that they are liberated." This quote also contradicts. Moreover, when realizing no-mind, appearance will become non-existent, and when the mind ceases, appearance will cease at that time. However, in the state of no-mind, appearance remains, which also contradicts. There are five states of no-mind, as stated in the Madhyāntavibhāga: "No-mind is sleep and fainting, and the two samādhis, and constant non-perception." In short, the idea that appearance is mind is a great darkness of wrong thought, so it must be eliminated. Third, the key to the liberation of dharmata from its own ground is the instruction that there is no affirmation or negation of appearance: The five external objects are absent, appearance is empty, self-purified, like the moon in water, so there is no need to purify it. Internal thoughts and concepts of the mind naturally dissolve, leaving no trace, so there is no need to destroy them with effort and antidotes. Appearance and mind are primordially liberated, relaxed, and do not attach the shackles of acceptance and rejection. Awareness is like a naked copper gong, do not put on the clothes of elaboration, but loosen the body and mind, let it naturally, freely, and without trace abide in great equality. Let the five senses arise naturally and freely display their original state. That is, the intrinsic nature of inner self-luminosity, awareness, is revealed, and in this state, whatever good or bad thoughts and ideas arise, recognize them as the natural expression of non-discriminating, spontaneously arising wisdom, and do not chase after them. Do not make appearance and mind tense, do not make them heavy, do not make them obscure, but let them be free in the natural ups and downs, so that the intention of Samantabhadra will naturally appear in the heart. As it says in the Sixth Chapter of the Klong Drugpa: "The self-appearance of all sentient beings is great, there is no place to seek it from elsewhere. By one's own power, one's own awareness, in the three thousand worlds, no matter where one seeks it, one cannot find a place where it exists."
