In short, the five spaces are: the space that pervades all, the space of clear radiance without location, the space of unmixed purity, the space that represents meaning, and the space that liberates to the pure realm. These are also, in order: awareness itself, the five lights, the lamp of completely pure space, the wisdom of signs, and the faith that ascertains the meaning of examples, given by twenty-one introductions. Thus, the assembled aspects of the five elements' awareness are the great elements, and their basis is the small elements. From the Supreme Vehicle's Precious Treasury, the explanation of the elements' place is the fifteenth chapter. The sixteenth chapter: Explaining the place where space and wisdom are spontaneously accomplished. Having thus established the nature of dependent arising, now there are four ways to categorize the dependent space and wisdom: the dependent body, the radiance of light, the dependent wisdom, and the excellent division of the activity of actions. First, the excellent division of the dependent body has two aspects: generally explaining the space of the three bodies, and specifically explaining the categories of the five bodies. The first includes briefly explaining the definition of the bodies and extensively explaining the place. The first is: the three bodies reside in space in the manner of one essence with different aspects. As it says in the Self-Arisen: "The appearance of the three bodies' wisdom, in which there is no obstruction, the object of focus is one, the essences appear separately." This is also a manifestation of one awareness. As it says in the same text: "Awareness without thought is the essence of the Dharmakaya. Awareness unceasing, clear, is the Sambhogakaya. Awareness appearing as anything is the Nirmanakaya." Here, there are three: perfection, Buddhahood, and expansion. Perfection, as it says in the Self-Arisen: "In the pure appearance of the three bodies, one is perfect, two are perfect, all are perfect. Wisdom appearance unceasing, clear. Completely pure wisdom radiates light. In awareness without thought, pure, the five lights unceasing, clear. In the great self-liberation without grasping, outer, inner, and secret dharmas are all clear. In awareness that has abandoned action, the dharmas of action and agent are perfected at once. In awareness apart from mind, various appearances are perfected at once. In the great self-appearance, clear and pure, the appearances of delusion are perfected at once. Self-

From the great liberation of self-appearance, other-born dharmas are perfected at once, and the way the three kayas are perfected is just like that. So it is said. Enlightenment is without any part of dualistic confusion. From that very thing, it says: Because there is no action, confusion is cleared away. Because there is no thought, afflictions are cleared away. Because there is no grasping, self-arising is cleared away. Because there is no attachment, conceptualization is cleared away. Because there is no clinging, ignorance is cleared away. The way the three kayas are cleared away is just like that. So it is said. As for expanding, qualities are spontaneously perfected and expanded from the beginning. From Self-Arising, it says: In the awareness without thought, the five lights are clear, so wisdom expands. In the awareness that is free from doing and activity, there is no object of focus, so the three kayas expand. In the appearance of awareness without an object, there is no grasping mind, so the five lights expand. In the great wisdom of awareness, the self-appearance of meaning expands as a result. The way the three kayas expand is just like that. So it is said. Secondly, in explaining the expansion of the place, there are three explanations of the expansion of the places of the Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya, and Nirmanakaya. Among the first, there are ten aspects: essence, definition, own-being, metaphor, sign, appearance, place, characteristic, object, and intention. The essence is emptiness, clarity, unobstructedness, and self-purity. From that very thing, it says: Immutability, unobstructedness, and pervasiveness are the essence of the Dharmakaya. So it is said. The definition is: Because it is the nature of reality, the clear light of the spontaneously accomplished pure realm, the essence is the unchanging, originally pure, and unerring dharma, and the self-nature is the spontaneously accomplished clear light kaya, the great self-abiding place. From that very thing, it says: Fearlessness, emptiness, and clarity, and all activities are perfected, are the definition of the Dharmakaya. So it is said. The own-being is that it is not established anywhere because it is free from all extremes of elaboration. From Self-Arising, it says: There is no outer, no inner, no space, it is the own-being of the Dharmakaya. So it is said. The metaphor is: Because awareness is clear light, it is like the sun; because it is profound, it is like the ocean; because it is free from the stain of faults, it is like the lotus; because it is immutable, it is like the mountain; because it is vast and without beginning or end, it is like the sky; and because it is endowed with the confidence of subduing all, it is like the lion. From that very thing, it says: The sun, the ocean, the lotus, the mountain, the sky, and the lion are the metaphors of the Dharmakaya. So it is said. Transcending going and coming is the sign. From Self-Arising, it says: There is no going, no coming, no abiding, it is the own-sign of the Dharmakaya. So it is said. Appearance is
