Like playful clouds, they pass quickly like water flowing down a steep mountain. As it is said in the Collection of Special Exhortations: Some die in the womb, likewise, some die immediately after birth, some die just as they begin to crawl, likewise, some die in their prime, some are old and some are young, some die just as they reach their prime. Therefore, saying that this person is young, what pride is there in being alive? Thus, thinking about impermanence, that one will surely die quickly, what is the use of this life's activities: attachment, hatred, fighting, laziness, hoarding, greed for fame and profit, sectarianism, subduing enemies, protecting friends, empty talk that doesn't stick to the meaning even when heard, and all spiritual friends? One must think deeply about this from the heart. As the saying goes: Life is short, knowledge is vast, the length of life is unknown, like a swan taking milk from water, one should embrace one's own desires. Therefore, from today onwards, one must strive to practice the profound Dharma. Even when looking at external phenomena, the four seasons change, so nothing is permanent. Day and night change in an instant, so nothing is constant. Thinking about the sequence of birth and death, nothing is stable. Thinking of the customers in a shop, even when gathered, there is separation. Thinking that one will surely die quickly, that one will surely die, that it is uncertain when one will die, that not practicing Dharma is of no benefit. Furthermore, looking at one's own illusory body, the aging of the body, the arising of thoughts, the sequence of happiness and suffering, thinking about these changes before and after, everything is impermanent, unstable, changing, and migrating, and there is no example of returning after death. Without relaxing for even a moment, one should only think about death. As it says in the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life: Day and night, I should only think about this. Therefore, until one turns away from this life, putting aside meditation and other behavioral practices, one should also think about this from the heart, because for turning away from samsara, there is no Dharma more profound than this. The great teacher Padmasambhava also said: Impermanence, without distraction, urge yourself with death, divide the day and night into periods, and constantly practice. Thus, contemplate. Therefore, looking at the long term, thinking about the formation and destruction of the world, life is impermanent; looking at the short term, thinking about moments and instants, life is impermanent. The senses and objects are also impermanent, only temporary changes. Retinue, etc.

Material possessions and wealth are impermanent; they exist now, but may vanish in the next moment. Parents and relatives are impermanent; once passed away, they are gone. Fellow countrymen and neighbors are impermanent; separations are many. Weather and age are impermanent; appearances change. Happiness and suffering, enemies and friends are impermanent, like a guesthouse. In short, all sentient beings rest their heads on birth and death, wear the clothes of happiness and suffering, lay down on the mat of grasping and clinging, make a bed of ignorance, sleep the sleep of self-grasping, and dream the dreams of habitual tendencies. In the house of the three realms of samsara, all beings who act with the nature of the five poisons are experiencing the sleep and dreams of lying down and getting up, without beginning, without end, and without a time of awakening. Thinking of these things, now one should strive to find a way to escape from the dark prison of samsara. Oh, samsaric beings controlled by karma and afflictions, even when impermanence manifests, you still cling to it as real. You are drowning in the river of birth and death, yet you do not know how to escape. You experience various sufferings, yet you have no time for fear. You are separated from true spiritual friends, without a guiding light or protector, with your eyes of Dharma closed, wandering in the darkness of ignorance. Thinking of these things, for this precious human life with leisure and opportunity that is difficult to obtain, you should generate a joyful mind and strive to practice the Dharma. Meeting with true teachers, the most excellent guides, qualified lamas, at this time of obtaining the nectar of profound Dharma, strive diligently to cross the ocean of the three realms. Life is impermanent, like the shadow of the setting sun, like a tree on a cliff swayed by the wind, like clouds and lightning, like dew on the tip of a blade of grass. You should contemplate the swiftness of death. If you do not remember death from the depths of your heart now, then laziness and distraction will be of no help at the time of death. Therefore, just as death is descending now, with fear and dread, practice the essential meaning. From today on, I will stay in a forest full of flowers, in a deserted place where the sound of flowing water is heard, at the foot of a secluded and delightful rocky mountain, contemplating the impermanence of the four seasons, with virtue as my ornament, obtaining the most supreme nectar among all that is created by humans, may I proclaim the great sound of impermanence and emptiness. In that beautiful place of medicinal trees, flowers, and Shangshung (place name), with the peaceful atmosphere of Dharma, like a tent of clouds, may the golden light of the Vidyadharas and Buddhas shine, may I accomplish the essence of clear light in one lifetime. The palace of liberation.
