It refers to holding onto and explaining the self-nature of the lamp. The oral instruction is said to be like a fruit that ripens, with the intention of making the three bodies the path. The self-abiding of the view is said to be like seeing the path of liberation, with the intention of making the result the path. Entering self-liberation is said to arise on the path of awareness, like a courageous man, with the intention of revealing the lamp itself. The ritual of the wise is said to be the completion of the transmission of oral instructions, with the intention of protecting the sacred teachings and making them abide for a long time. If one seeks the letters of these, the root is that the root of Dharma is gathered in awareness. The root of awareness is emptiness, free from grasping. By holding that tantra, awareness will meet its own face. By cherishing it, samadhi will abide in itself. By reading it, the meaning of what is expressed will arise in the mind. By explaining it, one will attain supreme and common siddhis. By meditating on it, samsara will be emptied out. By listening to it, one will experience temporary wisdom. Oral instruction is, the scattered words of oral instruction are lost in words, so the meaning does not truly arrive. The essential gathered meaning of oral instruction attains Buddhahood without relying on words. Relying on the expressing of oral instruction, the inexpressible meaning of awareness will arise in the continuum. The words of explanation are, relying on the scattering of words to symbolize the wisdom of non-scattering. The view is, there is no gap in the nature of reality that transcends time, and it abides in itself, not coming from elsewhere. Transmission is to generate trust in what is unchanging and stable. Awareness is, relying on that meaning, awareness will be liberated to the state of Buddhahood. Clarity is, because knowledge is clear, it does not abide anywhere. Because the senses are clear, one can distinguish between Dharma and non-Dharma. Or, placing the five senses beyond oneself, the six consciousnesses will tremble. Grasping that hand, one will transcend the three realms. Entering emptiness, entering appearance, therefore appearance and mind are combined. Entering appearance emptiness, there is no duality of subject and object, because it is self-liberated, so it cannot be changed. The wise one is, being skilled in the time and essence of the Mamos (guardian goddesses), one can weaken what is to be accomplished merely by thinking; being skilled in the action and its completion, one can cut off the life of what is to be accomplished merely by contemplating, without needing mantras and samadhi; being skilled in the mantras and samadhi of the Mamos, the deities will be close and siddhis will arise; the practice of the Mamos

Through skill in the practice of activities, one accomplishes one's own desired purpose; through skill in substances and offerings, wealth increases and activities are accomplished. Thus, among those who have been established, for those who delight in mental elaboration, everything is shown; for those of middling capacity, accomplishment is achieved through the eight tantras that condense those into eight categories, and for those who are excellent, the meaning of the tantras is condensed. Two are separated from method, three are separated from nature, so five are sufficient. Furthermore, for those who are better, the two tantras of meaning and words are shown; and for those who are exceedingly good and free from elaboration, accomplishment is achieved solely through the basic tantra of awareness, because awareness contains all the tantras. In the *Thal 'Gyur* it says: Furthermore, the nature of the tantra is explained. The true nature arises from sound. Its own essence is without letters. The lamp of self-aware wisdom blazes. Beautiful with auspiciousness through the purity of nature. The view is fearless, complete with the strength of a lion. Complete and self-arisen through the maturation of self-awareness. A string of pearls connected like a lineage. The appearance of experience is arranged like jewels. The emptiness of one's own place is like a mirror of the heart. Mistakes are self-corrected, a mirror of the mind. Not born from others, but self-arisen. Because it is self-arisen, it is self-liberated. One in the expanse, also six in the *klong*. Complete with qualities, a pile of jewels. Self-awareness is shown, adorned like an introduction. Pure appearance, the union of sun and moon. The body blazes because awareness has matured. All these also arise from the basis. Thus it is said. Alternatively, for those with elaboration, the basis and heart essence tantras, all the wheels of *thig le*. For the middling, seventeen. For the excellent, only the self-arisen seed tantra. For the topmost, it is said that liberation is achieved through the three: past, future, and present. In the Great Perfection *Ati* arrangement, it says: The meaning of its words is elaborated. For those with elaboration, it is the basis and heart essence. For those without elaboration, seventeen categories. In the state of utter non-elaboration, it is the arrangement of the *vajra*. For those utterly free from elaboration, liberation is through the three: past, future, and present. As it is. The second general meaning, the branch of the method of explanation, certainty, has three: the manner of how to explain, the categories of determining the topic, and the prophecy of determining the holy ones. The first has three: establishing the framework of the method of explanation, determining the manner of how to explain, and explaining the sound and meaning of the subsequent letters. The first is: In general, there are many ways of explaining, but if condensed, there are three:
